ib_of_the_damned Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Recently I have been getting into throwing swimbaits, and the rod that I have is rated to 2oz. Are there any swimbaits that any of you know of that are larger than 6", maybe around 7-10" that weigh 2oz.? I'm currently throwing 6" Weedless Hudds, 6" SPRO BBZs, and 5" Decoy Hydra Tails. Just looking for a bigger presentation. Thanks in advance! Quote
SeanW Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 The smallest one I throw is 6in and right at 2oz. I cant think of any with a bigger profile and lighter. Quote
OHIO Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Z9R-Swimbaits/product/10202507/-1600626 I just picked one of these up, but haven't had a chance to use it though so I am not sure how good it is. Quote
Mattlures Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 You might be able to find a big hollow body but a weighted hook big enough for it, will probably put you over 2.oz Your best bet will be a lean floating hardbait like a 7in MS Slammer or something with a similar profile. Quote
Primus Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I agree with Matt that the 7 inch Slammer would be a good one to add to your arsenal. I just recently recieved an Slow Sink 8" 22nd century Trout bait which didn't weigh much for it's size. I would think a 7" version of this bait would work with your equipment. A bait that I highly reccomend if you don't already have it is Matt's Hard Gill, I realize it's under 6" but it's a must have bait in my opinion. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted January 21, 2011 Super User Posted January 21, 2011 Can't have your cake and eat it too brotha. Buy a bigger stick and open up your possibilities. Over 6" and under 2oz is a difficult endeavor, especially when you are looking for quality baits with quality components. Quote

Although I have heard people mentioning the dorsal fin looking like a toothbrush, there maybe something to that. In Alaska when the Salmon are running,we go after the Salmon with bright colored yarn snelled on Octopus hooks. Once the salmon reach the rivers for the spawn, they stop feeding. We drift the yarn flies down stream and sometimes they end up in the mouth of a Salmon. The yarn gets into the teeth, which irritates them, causing them to bite at the yarn out of aggression. The fin on the back of this swimbait may have the same idea in mind? Regardless,if you look at the bait on the BPS website,it looks like this bait gets LOTS of great reviews, and isnt overly priced. Super User fourbizz Posted January 22, 2011 Super User Posted January 22, 2011 The 7" Stocker trout is around 2ozs I think. http://www.***.com/Stocker_Trout_Swimbait/descpage-STSB.html The 7 and 8 inch mission fish are both under 2ozs, and awesome baits. Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 29, 2011 Super User Posted January 29, 2011 Seriously consider adding the Stocker Bass to your arsenal. I've missed two giants with that bait last season (used the wrong line to get a decent hookset I believe?). Going to really give it a real workout this season for sure! (Will be using 25 lb. mono instead of fluoro this time though!) Your outfit will cast it just fine. I have an older 6'6" musky bucktail rod, rated for 3 oz. that I throw 8" Hudds with, with no problem. Just not sure what "design" your rod was intended for? Some just won't cut the mustard for repeatative casting of those bigger baits. You might consider the earlier suggestion and just get a new rod. They are not all that expensive (<$100.00) and match that with an Ambassadeur 6500C (<$100.00) and you're good to go. Quote

The rod that I have is a 7'10" Bass Pro Nitro Big Bass Rod MH/F rated 3/8-2oz and it works great for the SPRO BBZ 6" and 6" Weedless Hudds and 6" Lunker Punkers it really hucks em out there. I just dont want to go too much outside the rod ratings for fear of snapping it... But thank for the suggestion, I will definately be looking into those Stockers. I have a limited tackle budget and dont really want to be spending over $25 on swimbaits. Considering I have already lost two SPRO's to the lake I fish due to snags. Quote
Primus Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I just saw another one, the Jerry Rago Hitch hardbait is 7" and weighs 2oz., they have it at ***. Quote
