Baits During Windy Days

Do you guys like to throw certain baits when it's windy? Just curious because it is pretty windy today in Orlando and I will be going fishing later on. I know some people say spinnerbaits are good on windy days. Is topwater good on windy days?

Anything you can chuck and wind! If it's really windy you can't fish subtle baits and you don't want to be trying to retrieve baits from snags, so spinnerbaits are a pretty good option.

Swim jig, rattle trap, or 1/2 ounce squarebill. A buzzbait will hurt your feelings if the wind catches it and your reel blows up in a big backlash

Windy days generally means to me waves, current and a lot of movement overall.  So as mentioned above I follow natures recommendation and power fish with spinnerbaits, Red Eye Shads, Cranks, swimbaits etc.

 

I have also been successful with things like tubes and small finesse swimbaits as long as I have a heavier weight.  In those cases it is still moving at a good clip.

 

The last thing I try to do is any slow, sit on the spot type of fishing.

There are many good baits to try on windy days.

 

I believe the windblown side of the lake (not at all times of the season) will be more productive than the calm side but the wind can be brutal to fish in.  The solution for me is to fish the windy side until I get frustrated with the wind and then run to the calm side for some time.  Cranks and spinnerbaits can be tried on the windy side and jigs/worms/top water on the calmer side.  I may fish the calmer side longer but always keep an eye on the windy side because that's where I want to be more.  I understand you can anchor or use Power Poles, etc, but the wind is still brutal to endure.  Of course this is all relative to how windy it actually is.

Small swimbaits and Rage Menace are my 2 favorites.

I really like hard jerkbaits and spinnerbaits when the wind picks up. I almost always put the topwater away.

 

I fish a couple of lakes where the wind is your friend but a couple others where it is far from it. Really just depends on how the lake sets up and how the wind hits it.

On windy days I prefer to fish the windblown side of the lake and/or the sunny side if applicable.

Great baits for me are Red Eyed Shads in 3/4 oz., jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits/swimjigs and alabama rigs.

Lure selection also depends on what depth the bait and/or bass are holding.

When fishing from the bank keep the wind to your back and you can throw anything effectively.  From the boat its another story.  Spinnerbaits are a traditional big wind bait.
