Obviously not my first rodeo but it really couldnt be easier on a linux machine. In fact I cant remember how many webservers I have built in my days but enough that I pretty much know exactly what needs done on a linux box. Microsoft IIS I only ever had the pleasure of configuring once.

I turned my laptop into a linux machine about a month ago after being tired of dealing with windows nonsense. Opting to push Ubuntu Desktop 12.03LTS to it, ive started with server before when building a strait up server but its always nice to have an interface to work with. It also wouldnt be reasonable to have the only computer in the house become a server strait up.

My career change has my hands back into code again so I wanted another place to test as well as possibly build websites on the side. I always hated paying hosting fees to build sites, its kind of pointless when you can turn about any machine into a Linux Apache MySQL PHP server with very little effort.

A couple command line commands built the whole thing in ten mins, the rest was spent configuring virtual hosts and the database. If I had a real domain name and a static IP address I could already be serving pages to the web.

Im not recommending anyone jump into this but if youre a computer/tech guy and you havent dabbled in Linux you really should give it a shot.

Last time I dabbled in Linux was five or six years ago, beginning with Puppy and Ubuntu.  I didn't traverse the entire learning curve however, and even though I have somewhat of a natural affinity for messing with computers (I used to program simple games in BASIC on an Apple IIe, for Pete's sake) I found that I was waaaay too far behind to catch up very quickly, and eventually decided that the music and photo editing for which I primarily use a computer would be on hold for a year or two while I figured out how the heck I would be able to do it in a Linux environment.  I couldn't even guess at how much I didn't know, so I went back to Windows XP x64, my favorite OS to this day. Full disclosure though, my last name is Gates... Uncle Bill if you're reading this, I love Windows 8 more than all my children put together... really... honest...

It's not as awful as Millenium Edition, but I don't love the tiles. To be fair, probably half of my issues relate more to how my laptop and 8 conspire together to muck up even the simplest task. Cannot recommend the Lenovo Twist.
