Hi everyone.  I've done a pretty exhaustive search, but haven't found anything...so sorry in advance if I am asking a "repitative" question.

I'm looking for a punching reel, something to pair on my newly acquired Kistler Grass Punching Stump Grinder 7'6 XH Rod.  I'll be punching grass mats in Central Florida, so I need something that can hold up and handle up to a 2 OZ weight easily.

I have limited experience with a good punching setup, but a sturdy reel and a beefy drag are important to me.  I was thinking of either a Tatula Type R, a 13 ***, Chronarch 200E7, or a Curado I....but am open to other suggestions.  I'd like to keep the cost to $200 or below.  Obviously, there will be limited/no feedback on the 13 and Curado I...but they are in the decision for me.

Anyone have experience with the Tatula for punching?  Either the regular or Type R?

Thanks in advance!

I would throw the lews super duty out there. It was meant for heavy applications and has a 95mm aluminum handle, aluminum frame and gear side plate with brass gearing. I've Owned 2 and they are easy to cast, have a braid ready spool and more than enough power.

Fast gear ratios, sturdy gears, a good drag system and nice large knobs are the main characteristics I would look for. Any of the reels you mentioned will be good. In your situation I would find somewhere that you can throw them on the rod and see how they feel. If it was my choice out of the bunch it would be the Tatula Type R. Ive fished it a bunch, love it and the 8.1:1 ratio is great for covering a lot of water

I would suggest the Lews Superduty, or the ardent F700 or 500. also an older model chronarch or curado with an upgraded handle and drag systems would also be a good option... I typically like

I'd wait to hear about the concept.

22+ lb drag potentially, large handle with large knobs.

edit:  I see you already have your hands on it

I use Revo XS - HS on most of my flippin/pitching setups.  Around  150 bucks and very reliable.  I have pulled my Triton into gator vine with them.

I was a fan of the Ardent F500 for a long time. I sent one in for repair last year, and bought a second one at close out pricing. The reel I sent in for repair was replaced with a brand new reel. One of the new reels broke the first time out and they replaced it. Both reels broke last year. I'm done with them.

I replaced them both with gen 3 Revo stx's, that I got for a great price from valley sports. They have a 20lb drag which is more than most of the other available reels.

An aluminum frame, maybe side plate, and smooth strong drag are what to look for but 22# of drag on a bass reel is overkill. The rod is your main fish fighting tool and locking down a drag is just asking for something to break. A application like this stresses a reel so you want something sturdy but whatever you choose I wouldn't use it as a winch.

A few things....

Abu Garcia gen 3 does not have 20lbs of drag. Check out TT reviews. They are only around 10-12lbs.

Lews super duty is recorded at 11.9lbs.

13 *** is advertise at 22lbs, but if the trend seems to be like what I'm seeing probably have to wait until TT gets the reel in its lab to do a real test. Would be cautious how a 6.7oz reel balances with that big rod though. I bet if they net half of the advertise drag power people will go nuts. Surprising that nobody has ever raised the red flag about Abu Garcias false advertising.

Thanks everyone, I'll definitely check out the Lews on that rod.  I think it will be down to that or the Type-R.  I think I need a mid 7 oz weight to balance the rod, as.I put a *** on it today, and it was really off balance.  The Curado I felt a little better....but need a tad more weight, I think.

Yup that's what I was thinking with the 6.7 oz ***. I only have a 7'3 Heavy with a 6.5 oz reel and balance feels off already.

Where the heck do you live to be able to mount a Curado I and a ***? Curado seems to be sold out everywhere and thought the *** wasn't out until end of the month.
