Cast_And_Blast Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I'm fairly young (15) so I don't have a lot of money. I would however like to purchase some quality rods and reels but don't want to be broke after doing so. For me 100$ is about as mush as I could do on a combo. The reason I wanna purchase a rod and reel together is that I feel like it's cheaper than buying one good piece at a time. I don't mind buying used stuff but can't seem to find the right deal! For Christmas I got an Abu Garcia Silver Max with a Bass Pro IM6 Graphite Series Rod from Bass Pro. I would like to get two or three good combos instead of only one GREAT combo. I'm pretty happy with the one I have but I want to make the next step in quality and I know that's tough with my budget. I just don't know where to start! Should I stick with this setup and get a few more similar combos or look for something new? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tight lines! -Slater Quote
Dyerbassman Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I love Combos. The mix of pretzels and cheese is great! Just kidding....if you can find decent combos in your price range, definitely go for it. Bass Pro and Cabela's both have Pflueger Presidents matched with different rods that would be great for ya! 1 Quote
jsc4324 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I think it's going to be tough to find a quality lasting combo in that price range. PQ would be a good reel choice while it's on sale. Maybe check for a clearance rod or save a bit longer and use what you have for now. As much as it stinks to have to wait it will be worth while in the long run to save your money and get quality gear. Buy cheap now and you will regret it later. 1 Quote
ColdSVT Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Id snag a PQ on sale and then find a rod in the flea market or snag a lightning rod in sale 1 Quote

mmrivera86 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Not too big myself on buying combos. I am always on the look out for rods and reels that are on sale. When a company is coming out with a new version of a particular rod or reel, they will drop the old versions price greatly. I also like to buy them separate because I can get the set up just the way I want. good luck on finding a decent combo though if that's what you wanna stick with. I'm sure there are some good deals out there. 1 Quote
SpencerLittle Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I normally don't buy combos but last year this time I picked up a bionic blade plus combo from bps. I have to say it has been an awesome set up. I got a 7 foot mh and used it to flip plastics with and caught more fish than on any rod. I'm not saying it's a magical fish producer just that it's a solid set up that will hang with any of my high dollar rigs. If you do decide to go with buying seperate components I would say get a PQ, extreme, or even a bionic plus reel while on sell. Then go to walmart and pick up a berkley lightning shock rod. They are cheap and very effective. I've had 7 mh for about 3 years now with a high dollar quantum on and it has seen many fish as well. 1 Quote
Mike2841 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 When I was in high school I got by on a couple of quantum spinning combos, didn't have any complaints. 1 Quote
