gripnrip Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 fingernail clippers. Have not had an issue in many years doing this. Now those are some ninja skills right there! Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 I clip mine on a belt loop to have it handy when needed. Exactly why I liked the idea. Plus mine has the LED light in it too. Not bad for $11.00 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 I also use the Boomerang tool snips. And for the really big stuff . . . . . . A-Jay 2 Quote

FrankW Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I have tried a lot of ways to cut braid and still don't have a good solution. I am a long, long time fly tier and have tried several very good scissors. Finally serrated scissors cut braid very well but they dull in a season. I have the Boomerang but it will only cut if the line is under tension. I am disappointed in tis performance. They work OK but not the real answer. A electric line cutter works good but there is a delay waiting for it to heat. Nail clippers don't cut braid without a lot of effort. Wire cutters that are real sharp with perfectly matched blades might be the answer but the ones I have don't work any better than some of the other things I have tried. I still haven't given up on serrated scissors or razor scissors. If I find the ultimate braid cutter I will let you know. Many of the methods listed by members in this forum I find to be less than satisfactory. I want a clean cut every time with out tension on the braid. Cheap scissors, the Boomerang or nail/toe clippers don't cut braid like I think they should. Frank Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 I just use the split of my Rapala pliers. I give the pliers a nice tight squeeze and the braid is cut. Quote
BobP Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 The best scissors I've found are the 5" Gerber straight cut model that you can find at Walmart for around $5. I got some 7-8 yrs ago and it's still cutting braid as good as the first day I used them. I HATE Gerber knives 'cause they are basically immune to sharpening but put the same steel in some scissors and you've got something! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 Whatever is laying around on The boat, small braid scissors, titanium cutters on the fish pliers, leatherman multitool, nail clippers, machete in need be Quote
McAlpine Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I was using rapala braid scissors and they worked ok. Usually a good cut, sometimes it would fray a bit. Last year I went to boomerang snips and they are the shizzle. Quote

Sitting in my man cave at home, many times I will grab my "good" Dr. Slick's to snip some line I am working with. Always makes me cringe but they are handy when I'm by the bench. However; my experience with the boomerang snips has been completely different from yours. Fast, clean cut every time. Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 In the heat if the moment I've been known to bite thru 65lb braid Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 Fiskars kid scissors from Walmart. They even have this thing that slides over the blades though I throw them away. Quote
fishva Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I have some weird brand of retractable scissors that my wife had -- they were for crafting, but she didn't like them. They didn't have enough precision, or something. But they sure cut through line well! Quote
fadetoblack21 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I have a few tools that I use and keep in my bag for various uses and I always carry a very sharp knife. Aside from the knife, I use a pair of mini end nipper pliers, or a pair of surgical scissors that seem to never dull. Both work great at cutting knots. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 7, 2014 Author Super User Posted March 7, 2014 That's a wide selection Quote
FlipnLimits Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Good old fingernail clippers that are attached to a retractable I.D. badge holder. It's fast and always attached to my belt. No need to look for it, it's attached at the hip always. I also don't use too much braid, for frogs and punching only. What do you use Catt? FL Quote
