Superdumper Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I know the topic of sunglasses has been brought up before, I used the search bar!! The reason I am starting a new topic is because it seems like everyone just suggests costas. Which by my research they seem amazing. The issue is I don't have that kind of money to drop on sunglasses, all my money went into new set ups and a kayak. So, my question is what are some good mid range polarized glasses. I'm looking at something better then a $20 pair but not as expensive as $150+ pair. Mid range but reliable for a period of time, until I can upgrade to costas. Any suggestions are useful. It would help if you could state the brand, model n lens color too. I went to dicks to try some but being indoors not on the water I feel that test wasn't very true. Thanks!! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 5, 2014 Super User Posted March 5, 2014 Much like my suggestions with swimbaits, buy a good pair to start (and take care of them) and it will save you money in the long run. If I buy a pair of $30 glasses each year for 5 years or spend $150 up front, there is no difference in overall "value" 2 Quote
AnglerNo.2112 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I'm looking at that same price range of sunglasses that you are and it seems like the Strike King S11's get brought up a lot. I'm thinking about ordering a pair in Amber but I can't find any information about sizing. I got a small head and "one size fits all" can sometimes be too big for me. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I went thru the same thing this year after losing an irreplaceable pair of sunglasses in the spring - I used these glasses for 15 years for driving, fishing, and general wearing. I wanted a pair that would serve as all purpose, but was good enough to fish with. Everyone suggested Costas or Solar Bats or Oakleys, which yeah I wanted, but could never justify the cost since I didn't have more than $50 to spend. I went to BPS and tried on just about every pair of glasses I could find. The first problem is making sure your sunglasses do what they are supposed to do, and looking into a mirror at a counter is not the best place to figure that out. You have to convince the clerk to let you take the glasses outside in the sunlight to see how they perform. In my case I gave the lady my wallet to convince her I wasn't going to run off with whatever glasses I was trying out. After about two dozen pairs, the one that worked best for me in terms of shading my eyes, sharpening my vision and being polarized turned out to be the Strike King SK11s, blue tint. $30. They were better than the on sale Solar Bats for $70 (which looked funny anyway)... Sorry for being long winded, sunglasses are important. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted March 5, 2014 Super User Posted March 5, 2014 I started out with strike kings, ok but Solar Bats are probably as inexpensive as I would go. Look for closeouts and deals on costa de mar. They are well worth it, even their plastic lenses blow away the competition. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 go without food or beer and buy costas you'll never regret it 1 Quote
Crankinstein Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I bought some Costas on that auction site for $75. If you search around on there long enough you can find some good deals. Quote
FishinFool22 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Can't beat Costas IMO especially the glass lenses they are something serious Quote
RAMBLER Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 The best ones I've found, in the $20. range are Spiderwire. I found them at Sports Academy. They are the only ones, in that range, that did not somehow distort my vision. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 5, 2014 Super User Posted March 5, 2014 I am Costa's guy, however another pair of glasses that I have that are not bad at all are Native's. Good lense, light frames. I bought the pair I have for around $99. Quote

They are the only ones, in that range, that did not somehow distort my vision. I have had expensive sunglasses and lost them, several times,My trusty spiderwire glasses are my favorite. Sure, costas and all the others are better, but for 25 bucks you cant beat the Spiderwire glasses. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 6, 2014 Super User Posted March 6, 2014 Another Costa vote. Ebay has a lot of Costa knock-offs, so you'll want to find one from a reputable seller (with a very high rating -- 99.x% and up). I picked up my pair, brand new, fully legit for (I think it was $160 +/- $5). Put some Cablz Zipz on them and they've been awesome. I, too, was one who bought a few pair of sunnies, cheap, but the cost adds up, so I splurged (with my wife's permission) and bought the Costas. Quote
SpencerLittle Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I really like the strike kings. The pair it seems all the walmarts carry is a very good pair IMO. They're comfortable and do there job. The first pair I order was off of amazon and I got a lenses color that I call rose. Both pairs have worked great and I will probably buy another to start off this summer. Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Numa are the way to go if you want indestructible and quality for a reasonable price. My costas would never stand up to what I put my numas through. I switch the lenses out and go shooting with them, throw them around, sit on them, almost anything. Sat on a pair of oakleys and they were done. https://numaoptics.com/ Quote
