Fishing Hats

Hey everyone,

    I got a quick question.  I am looking for a good fishing hat.  I would prefer one that has a bill that goes all the way around (no baseball caps) and waterproof in case of rain.  Anyone point me in a good direction, thanks.

Wood, I use a plastic raincoat with a hood to pull over my cap.

When it is cold, I wear a rabbit fur cap, a wool pullover or a regular baseball cap, depending on the temperature.

You can get some waterproof spray at Wal-Mart and spray your cap.

But I suggest wearing a yellow raincoat with the hood.

However, maybe some of the guys have other suggestions.

I am surprised you did not mention wearing yellow and purple to help me catch more fish, hahah.

If you want it for the rain, you'll need to treat it with something like this : http://www.nwbackpack.com/products/kiwi_waterproof_sprays.php

You can find it in shoe stores or Dick's. It will allow the fabric to breathe so you don't get poached in the sun. When you first apply it the smell will knock you over. Leave it outside or hanging in the garage for 24 hours and the smell will completely disappear.

I've been told to wear hats like that by my doctor because of skin cancer issues.

A few years ago a buddy of mine had roughly 1/8 inch of skin whittled off of each ear because of skin cancer issues. He always wore a ball cap and his ears were always exposed.

I got a fishing hat from Columbia that has a brim slightly wider than an average boonie hat. It handles rain ok. At Cabelas, I saw a hat made of gore-tex, called a "Seattle Sombrero" I forgot who made it, but it was made for fishing /hiking in rainy weather.

I have more issues with wind. I've had the extended brim on the had act like a kite and fly off my head on several occasions. The hat has a chin strap, but I really don't like using the chin strap.

I'm always on the look out for the perfect fishing hat, but I haven't found it yet.

I agree, that is why I want a Booney style hat.  All that sun on the back of your neck and ears could not be good in the long run and I plan to fish a lot. 

I did a quick search for the Seattle Sombero, it looks like cost is about $54.  A little rich for my blood, might go with a $20 booney hat and scottguard it instead.

I plan to take Woody to the double secret pond and let him go at it with a few large ladies, hat or no hat.

But he has to wear pants.

I think you will find that the booney hat does a good job of protecting your ears but not your neck. Wear a shirt with a collar and flip the collar up for better protection. There is alot of reflection of harmful sun rays coming from the water so a good sunscreen is pretty important as well.

I like an Adidas golf visor.  They're cool, comfortable, and durable.

Yeah I go through a bottle or can of sunscreen every week during the summer. I landscape so I am in the sun all day and I burn like crazy. Thinking of trying out this hat http://www.columbia....default,pd.html or the original boonie bora bora.
