Just finished another crate, but this time I cut up a second crate for use as dividers. The dividers are held firmly in place using zip ties and they work great. I can now remove one box without fumbling around with bungees and other boxes. The crates were $4.95 each for a total cost of $26.90 including shipping. (milkcratesdirect.com)

I want this. I'm in something a little bigger than a kayak, but this would be perfect. How did you do it?

Looks good. I don't use a crate anymore, but it's a nice job you've done.

I used a cordless circular saw and cut the sides from another crate, then secured them inside the main crate with zip ties. The type of plastic used in crates will not gum up the saw either, makes a nice clean cut.

This is great. I just bought a kayak and need a milk crate as well. Are these sturdy? I want the industrial grade/heavy duty milk crates and not the cheap plastic ones from Walmart.

Yes, they are the real deal.

I got a nice, sturdy crate at Sears...and they have a larger size as well that fit perfectly on my Ascend D10T.

Nice work!!  Really like that idea.  I am looking at putting a top on mine by cutting a second crate, but like the idea of using the remaining sides of the cut crate to make slots.  Looks really nice.  How did you secure them?

As Jay said, I used zip ties, one top and one bottom on both sides of the divider. The zip ties provide a very secure connection and they can always be cut and refitted for deeper boxes. If you're worried about rolling your kayak over you can use one bungee across the top of the boxes or make a lid like you mentioned.

Nice idea with the dividers.

This, sir, is a fantastic rig you've made.  I may have to get shoppy on one for myself one of these days.  I will use metal because I can, but for milk crates you could also use epoxy to hold them together if you aren't into zip ties.

I just drilled holes int he appropriate spots and  secured with stainless nut/bolt.

Where do you guys get your crates?

I get mine from milkcratesdirect.com

I've also added another rod rack to my latest crate to give me more options for rods. It also provides additional positioning for my YakAttack VISI Light/Flag pole and Pan Fish camera pole.

Looks great! I just picked up the wide crate for my native ultimate 14.5. I need to get my rod holders on and start rigging it out. Thanks for the ideas

Some neat ideas in here. If anyone wants to sell their crates I could use one and would pay a fair price. Especially if it was a rigged up with rod holders already! Can't find one local and would purchase from online except the shipping price for one crate is ridiculous.

Target and WalMart sell Milk Crates too.  They are sturdy and do the job.

The Container Store is another place that sells them.

I haven't seen any decent ones at Walmart. They are just the plastic crates with really thin webbing/walls that flex too much imo. The Container Store and MilkCratesDirect sell them for a few bucks but the shipping is like three times the price of the crate lol.
