I'm going to buy a fishing life jacket soon since spring is getting closer.  The one I'm probably going to go after is the Stohlquist fisherman high back life jacket.  Here is my question:  The life jacket comes in two colors:  Green and yellow.  When I'm sitting or standing in my kayak fishing for bass and I have a big yellow life jacket on, could they possible notice that and be spooked?  Wouldn't a green colored life jacket be better?  To be honest, I would like to get the yellow one for safety reasons and to be out on any water in a yellow life jacket seems stylish to me!  But I don't want the yellow one if it's going to spook the fish away.

Opinions?

I'd get the yellow for safety. The one I bought from Bass Pro was only in a desert sand color... But there are so many people who yak fish in brightly colored kayaks, a much bigger "distraction" if color was to be a distraction.

I'd go for visibility, personally.

You ever seen Skeet Reese on the water?  Yellow boat, yellow jersey, yellow visor, yellow rods, yellow.......  He is obviously big on safety ;)

Its better to be safe. When I bought my kayak I picked the red/yellow scheme because I knew I would be on lakes and the blue/white and camo color boats might see me.

What is the water clarity like in the lake/river? If you can only see 4 feet and you are fishing 10ft, then most likely they wont even see the boat or you in whatever color you wear.

People fish better when they are confident in a particular bait, in the same way if you feel more confident wearing a bright color to be safe then I say you should take your own guts advice. You certainly could always tone the color down on the front of the vest with a few fishing patches, camo duct tape, fabric approved spray paint etc., my thought there is you will still be seen well from behind and you will not be so flashy facing forward to the fish you are presenting your lure to.

I have a friend who swears that a white rod is invisible to the fish and that is why Duckett and Veritas rods are what he uses.  I highly doubt the color of your jacket will make a difference.

IMHO safety first.

Your life jacket color isn't going ot be noticed that much but there have been a few studies that indicate a brightly colored paddle blade draws more attention as it is generally moving and seen easier.

I have a green PFD and to me color is not important.  I get the one that i will wear and is comfortable.

If you are concerned abotu teh safety aspect get yourself one of the lights that yopu can mount on the back of your kayak like yak attack sells and if that doesn't get you noticed, there is nothing else you can do really.
