Hey guys, just recently got my new spinning rod, a G Loomis nrx 822 syr. After short debate I went with a shimano stradic ci4+. Was wondering if braid would be a good choice for this setup? Was thinking 10lb, for the extra casting distance, and I was going to use a high viz for light bite detection. Not sure what others are running on these rods, or preference on floating or sinking braid and brands. I'm going to use this mostly for the intended application, shaky head, but may also throw some smaller weightless worms, flukes small shallow cranks, small top waters, and buzz baits or spinnerbaits. Was thinking about using 8lb fluoro, but sometimes I catch fish by watching my line, and it can be hard to see. Also, fluoro wouldn't cover all the applications mentioned above. Not sure if the rod would be too stiff to have enough give with braid tho, hope someone can help, thanks!

Well, a lot of guys like braid on their spinning reels, but I would go with #6 Tatsu fluorocarbon.

I think Tatsu is the cat's meow!

If you decide on braid, you might give the new Seaguar Smackdown a try.

I have not fished the line yet, but I am excited to give it a try.

I have the same rod with a stella and use 6lb tatsu on it. Tatsu is fantastic on that setup

I've used that rod for a few hours for walleye on pool 4 and a fishing partner of mine uses the same rod. He uses 10# pp high vis on it for walleye and 7# fluoro during bass season. he loves it. The rod is incredibly sensitive no matter what line you have on it.

With an NRX and Tatsu....you don't have to watch the line, you'll feel the bite. Only issue might be the topwaters and buzzbaits with fluoro because it sinks, though it's doable. I like fluoro much better than braid for weightless plastics and shakyheads though.

Sometimes I fish this pond after work with the shaky head. That's all I can get them on. Anyways, this pond has quite a few weeds mid summer, along with rocks and some branches. You think 6lb would be sufficient? Don't know how tough that line is for sure, but I occasionally get hung up in the weeds, and pull back a 10lb clump. Would tatsu fluorocarbon still be ok?

i'd personally go 8# tatsu if I were you. The line has a very small diameter(only .009) in comparison to others 8#.

First, let me say that is an outstanding setup! I fish alot of tatsu, on both spinning and casting gear. Typically on spinning gear I run 6 or 8# line. However, for more general purpose you are best going with 8#. It will give you added strength to muscle those fish away from cover. From shakeyheads to drop shots, and tubes to small hair jigs that rig will do it all.

Just don't forget to apply KVD line and lure as needed as well as closing your bail by hand. I fish straight floro on 75% of my spinning setups. By doing both of these things I eliminate 95% of line twists and loops I was getting before.

Thanks for the comment on the rig.  Yeah, I know its high money setup, but I wanted something really good, this is more expensive than all the other rods and reels I own probably.  My first G Loomis too, I figured go all out, only problem is that I cant use it for a couple months at best, as there is over 3 feet of ice on all of the lakes, and we are getting another 7 inches of snow tonight.  It has been so cold lately, winter is relentless.

For reel performance, I always close the bail by hand, since I started using open face way back when I was 6 years old.  Its the way my dad taught me.  For line conditioner, lately I have been using Ardent Line Butter, I bought the kit with the cleaners.  I think it has the reel grease, reel oil, line conditioner, and a cleaner solution included in the kit.  The conditioner has been doing good, I use it on my baitcaster with 12lb fluoro, Seaguar Invizix, and the line flows off nicely.  I really like the Seaguar products, but 40 dollars for a 200 yard spool seems insane.  Can it be had for cheaper anywhere else?  Also, how does this compare to the Sunline Sniper fluoro, anyone ever try both of these?  Not trying to skimp on line here, just don't want to pay retail for it.  Thanks!

Sniper isn't as limp, nor does it have as good knot strength, but it's fairly comparable. I have used 8lb Sniper in lieu of Tatsu for the same reason, to save a little cash. I found Sniper on sale for $8 at Gander last year and bought several spools, so that's what I've been using lately. I think you could use 8lb Sniper and you'd be just fine. I actually just spooled up my newest spinning reel with some 8lb Sniper this morning. I usually wait for the big 25% sales to buy Tatsu because I don't like paying retail for it either.

Seen Sunline also has the sniper BMS red fluorocarbon line (bite detection system)  It seems like a good idea, or does it having color take away from the fluoro effect?  One other quick question, casting distance with fluorocarbon on a spinning outfit vs braid, will I still be able to cast the fluoro, say 8lb about as far as I could 10lb braid (2lb diameter)??  Maybe I should just pick up a spare spool for my reel and call it a day....

Can't really comment on the BMS because I haven't used it. I do have some 12lb Shooter Green and haven't noticed a lack in bites due to the color. You might lose a slight amount of casting distance, but it would be negligible. A lot of that has to do with the rod, more so than the line. You should still be able to cast them plenty far.

I have tested a significant number of floro lines on the market over the past few years including both Tatsu and Sniper. I really like both, but Sniper isn't on the same playing field as Tatsu. Invisix is a similar line to Sniper but Sniper was a bit more sensitive in my hands due to less stretch. The Invisi and Tatsu lines both cast brilliantly. This year I have settled exclusively on Sniper and Tatsu on the rods that I run straight floro on.

When you have an NRX and a reel spooled with Tatsu or Sniper the difference in performance and feel will be there, but not a not and day difference. For someone that fishes frequently the difference would be more noticeable and to an extent more justifiable.

The other part of the equation to consider about Tatsu is how you fill your reel. You should be able to spool your reel 3x with one spool. Just use backing for about 50-60% of it and you can save money that way. Also don't forget that Tatsu has a longer life expectancy then most other floros. It is easy to get a year or year and a half out what you have spooled up.

Some of this stuff you may already know but I figures I would fill on a few blanks if you didn't. Lastly Tatsu used to be close to $50 a spool. Price has came down a bit plus you can usually get it discounted more during sales. I remember paying about $26 a spool last year from TW.

Why not get a spool of 8lb suffix mono and just call it a day. There's nothing wrong with mono and it's the best line for a multi purpose rod like you are planning to use it for. I'm sure the fish won't mind that you paid ten bucks a spool
