bassin is addicting Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 which do you prefer and why? which one has the better sensitivity? from the pics, it looks like the handles are quite different. the Avid looks to have a "power hump"? big problem i have is that i can't get my hands on both to see how they feel. which stinks since i will be spending $200. the most i ever have for a rod. i am going to BP friday to see how the Avid feels with that slight hump. this will be my 1/2oz and less jig rod, texas rig, carolina rig.. i prefer a cork handle...full or split doesn't really matter. i am open to other suggestions also in that price range. or if you may have one for sale.. thanks for all your input. tbone1993 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 The aetos are sick rods and have an easier warranty than the croix. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 4, 2014 Super User Posted March 4, 2014 I owned a MH/F Avid in spinning and baitcasting..and I currently own Aetos in a H/F casting and M/F spinning. Here are the pros from my Avid experience : 1. Good sensitivity, nothing mind blowing but definitely a jump from a Veritas level. 2. Quality is great. Cons: 1. Fished heavier than rating 2. Tip heavy Aetos Pros: 1. Light Weight 2. Very sensitive (compare it in the 200-300 rod range) 3. Fishes power/action true (preference thing) 4. Very Good Quality build Cons: 1. Casting rod is tip heavy Plus you can find the Aetos cheaper than an Avid, so if it were me...recommendation would be the Aetos, more bang for your buck and fishes better than the Avid personally. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 4, 2014 Super User Posted March 4, 2014 Tough one, when you can't get your hands on one. I have never fished an aetos, but I have fished a B/C Avid 7ft MH for several years now. Great tough rod. It has landed many a nice fish. It suits me well. Every rod will have there pro/ con's and if you are going to drop $200 on fishing hardware that you plan to have for a while, I would try to get my hands around one before pulling the trigger. Quote

This is very good information, I would also add the grip on the Aetos is thinner than some like, to me it gives me a more solid grip so I like the way it feels and I like the Fuji SK 2 reel seat. I have a 7'2" MH-XF fast Aetos, I'm also very familiar with the St.Croix Avid as one of my fishing buddies is really into the St. Croix brand and I can tell you that you really can't go wrong with either but I'd say you do get more bang for the buck with the Aetos simply because they are lighter and have a little more feel but I know from experience that if a handle is uncomfortable, then you aren't going to feel much, I have a GL3 spinning rod over an IMX simply because the GL3 was better because the handle was more comfortable so it isn't always about price. bassin is addicting Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 good info. thanks. it sure would nice to be able to hold both. i have a BPS and Cabela's a little over 2 hours away. both have the Avid. neither one carries the Aetos. i may make the drive just to hold the Avid. the handle concerns me. and it sounds like the Aetos is a great value and $20 less. not that $20 is much difference at this point. but it gives me $20 for something else...lol.. would like to get some more input...thanks.. Super User Tywithay Posted March 4, 2014 Super User Posted March 4, 2014 I prefer the Avid, if for nothing other than the full handle. I'm not the biggest fan of split grip rods. I also much prefer the guides on the Avid over the Aetos. Best rod in that same price point to me is the Kistler KLX, and I don't think it's that close. I'd buy one of those before I looked at anything else. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I have a 7' med-heavy fast spinning and a 6'6" med-heavy fast casting avid. I love them both. But like someone else said they fish a little heavier than they feel. I wouldn't throw anything less than a 1/2 bait on either of mine. If you think your mainly going to throw less than that I would consider the medium power. And the hump on the handle is great. Its not really that big but it adds enough that you can tell your grip is better. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 well....i was leaing towards the Aetos. now i plain don't know...i do want a MH....i think?? lol... i will be throwing a lot of 3/8oz jigs...so? i hadn't considered the KLX... i'll drive the BP friday to see how the Avid feels... Well the medium avid is rated for 1/4-5/8 and the med-heavy is rated for 3/8-1oz. Unless your going to throw 3/4oz baits I would get the medium Quote
