Super User Darren. Posted March 3, 2014 Super User Posted March 3, 2014 I've been fishing Senkos a lot lately and I can't seem to catch a fish on em! I've been texas rigging them without any weight. Do any of y'all know any tips or tricks that could help me? Lots of Senko threads on the forums, BTW. But have you tried wacky rigging them? Hook them perpendicular to the hook, with the hook through the bottom part of the egg sack, or wherever it balances out 1/2 and 1/2 of the worm. Throw near laydowns, docks, shoreline structures, etc. Let it shimmy down the water column. A very effective Senko technique. Also, be patient. Let it sink, fish it slow... Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 3, 2014 Super User Posted March 3, 2014 There is no wrong way to fish them, it might just be your location has no fish. 3 Quote

Super User Jar11591 Posted March 3, 2014 Super User Posted March 3, 2014 Wacky rig them! Put the hook right the through the middle and don't add any weight. It's hard not to catch fish! Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 3, 2014 Super User Posted March 3, 2014 I like dead sticking them but you have to be careful because the bass will swallow them. If you are not catching them with a senko then there isn't any fish in the area you are using them, I'm not saying that to be smart, but that is one bait that fish just hit, it is what I call my "day saver", if no bites and no fish on anything else, I'll use the senko and yes, it is my go to when all else fails. The way I fish them most of the time is a 5" rigged Texas style with no weight, and make a cast to a laydown or other cover and just let it fall to the bottom, I wait about 10 seconds keeping an eye on my line the entire time and if no bites I'll pick it up and let it fall again and wait, it is slow this way but they will bite it. Wacky rigging is another way but I'm in and around shallow cover most of the time and get hung too much and I've only tried the weedless hooks toward the end of last season so I'm try that more this year. michang5 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I personally have no confidence in Texas-rigging a senko. I have lots of success with wacky. I increased my success when I added the 4" senko to my repertoire alongside the 5". While there are many folks much more skilled with them, I detailed my recent senko testing here: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/130873-need-help-from-kayakers-that-fish-wacky-senkos/page-2#entry1460497 Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 In the last 19 years of fishing with artificial bait I don't think I've caught a fish on a senko. I know they work for some people but there's too many other baits that catch fish for me to fool with them. Quote
zackzp23 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 The Senko is a great fish catcher, keep using it and you will see results. I use the Senko the most when the water is high on my local lake, it is dynamite when wacky rigged weightless and slowly twitched through the bushes. I use a Red Gamakatsu 2/0 EWG hook. If you don't have an abundance of cover on your lake don't be discouraged, I've had great success fishing a Senko when water levels were low as well. I use the 5" Senko in Watermelon Red flake, Bubble Gum, and Natural Shad. Quote
The Fisher Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Fishing senkos is a sure way to catch fish if they are there. I prefer wacky rigged with an O ring and an owner 1/0 hook with no weed guard. When you fish a wacky Senko you need to be a line watcher. A lot of times the fish will just start swimming away and you will feel nothing. Other times it will be a small tap tap. I also find a smooth horizontal sweep gets the hook set better than a violent vertical jerk as you would do with a jig or TX rig. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Fish it wacky and shallow in the spring around brush, docks, overhanging trees, rip rap etc. You will kill them and it will give you confidence in it. Quote
Arv Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 1. You're over working it 2. There are no fish where you are fishing Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 4, 2014 Super User Posted March 4, 2014 Sounds to me like you might be fishing where they ain't! If you can locate a population of bass, then a Senko will catch them. I prefer fishing it Texas rigged (weightless) if I'm after largemouths; wacky rigged if I'm after smallies or if the cover is less snaggy. With the later, I'll be using a circle hook most of the time. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted March 4, 2014 Super User Posted March 4, 2014 In the last 19 years of fishing with artificial bait I don't think I've caught a fish on a senko. I know they work for some people but there's too many other baits that catch fish for me to fool with them. That's exactly what I thought. I don't think I used one prior to 2006 or 2007. Now, I use them a LOT and forever will! I'll tell ya how I got started with them....bought them for my youngest boy to throw. Easy to cast, no special retrieves required for a 6 yr old. That boy whupped me something good with those dang things the first day. Not just shallow either. Hit a deep hump once and he would throw that thing out and just put his rod down while I worked my around with a jig. I was just too proud watching him catch fish to care, but whup me did! Don't ignore the senko! Quote
