Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 2, 2014 Super User Posted March 2, 2014 No hard feelings Was just speaking from personal experience with these smaller brethren. I agree 100% with your above statement, except for the 50. The added backing, 1/8" from top of spool, and smaller spool add up. And I love the 50s! I sent several reels to a guy for cleaning, and upgrading the drags on most of them and bearings on a couple of them. He told me if I wanted maximum distance I had to fill my spools...and I don't mean 1/16 - 1/8 inch from spool lip. I also had my spool tension too tight (to control backlashing). Said to set tension just enough to remove side-to-side play. I set up all my reels that way. It required learning to cast all over again, although not as long as when I first started. Yes they will backlash if not careful, but I was backlashing with partially filled reels. I feel the extra effort spent learning to control my reels set up this way was worth that extra effort. Now I can back off just a bit on casting effort without losing distance, and seldom backlash anymore. Set up this way I probably had at least 1/4 inch of spool showing after making a cast with that 3/4 oz. spoon. Quote
