crankbait2009 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I was just reading another thread about users using "x" brand and some other people using the "BPS" brand when it comes to lures. The only BPS lure I have had GREAT success with is the BPS "The Egg" crankbait. Love that lure!!!! Which got me thinking, other than cost being a reason, are there a lot of people that would use BPS lures over other brands because they are "better"? (other brands being: strike king, rapala, bomber, etc) Quote
boostr Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I use Dick's brand lures that worked for me, I think Strike King and Booyah make Dick's name brand lures. Probaply the same deal with BPS some big name company making the BPS lures. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 i never thought a "big brand" could actually make the BPS lures. I figured they were there own brand Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 27, 2014 Super User Posted February 27, 2014 i never thought a "big brand" could actually make the BPS lures. I figured they were there own brand BPS is a retailer, not a manufacturer. They don't make anything, everthing "BPS" is simply made for them or relabled. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 27, 2014 Super User Posted February 27, 2014 The egg is a good bait from BPS but the finish stinks. I used one on a float trip and by the end of the trip it had almost no color left and the hooks were terrible. To be fair, it was used heavily for three days and caught me a lot of fish but the quality of the bait seemed lacking. After upgrading the hooks out of necessity i was in the range of the rapala baits and they, to me, are more durable. Quote
boostr Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I'm not saying it as a fact, but I wouldn't be surprised. It's like Cabelas Prodigy brand reels were made or still are made by Diawa. Quote
Djman72 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Bought a BPS branded popper and it was trash. I have used some of their soft plastics (Stick baits, creatures, etc) and had decent luck with them. Quote

Which got me thinking, other than cost being a reason, are there a lot of people that would use BPS lures over other brands because they are "better"? (other brands being: strike king, rapala, bomber, etc) The BPS baits that I use, I use because they are better than my name brand equivalents or have actions unlike anything In my box. Some of the XPS hard baits have great actions but all have poor finishes and cheap hooks. They're Japanese designed, Chinese built baits. Whatever tooling they have over there is pretty decent as the baits run true out of the box and are largely free of dents and tooling defects. If you're willing to put up with thin clear coats, cheap hooks and bait that may tumble in the air on windy days in exchange for a great fish catching action then baits like XPS squarebills, Egg, Laser Eye Deep Diver and Slim Dog are good baits. I haven't found a better fish catcher than the squarebills or a better wakebait than the 3/4 oz Egg. I'm a believer that you get what you pay for, just that you need to know what you are paying for. I've seen the cheapest of the cheap cranks have fantastic action and high dollar baits with mediocre action. A lot of what you are paying for in high dollar cranks are things that matter to angler more than fish. Things like how "nice" a bait is. You have to know your priorities. I know people that will fish a crank with an average action with an above average price because they like the hooks, paint, durability ect. I value action above everything else in a crank and will put up with things that will send other angers off the deep end. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 27, 2014 Super User Posted February 27, 2014 MY issue with BPS branded cranks is that I think the finishes are weak, and they chip off easily - compared to , say a Timber Tiger or a Lucky Craft - which have decent finishes that are pretty durable. Quote
frogflogger Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 stik - o's - I have hundreds - they work - I stay away from store brand hard baits - not interested in trying a store brand when I know the action of the name brand Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 28, 2014 Super User Posted February 28, 2014 The BPS branded version of the flick shake worm is as good as the Jackall and much cheaper. In fact...........some how they managed to make them less durable than the Jackall's, thats quite a feat. And the 3.5 " Tender tubes have a cult like following among tube draggers around here. Quote

Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted February 28, 2014 Super User Posted February 28, 2014 I use name brand and store brand.soft plastics i like gander and bps and i buy bame, brand, plastics as well. For,harf baits mostly name brand unless i make jigs my self. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 28, 2014 Global Moderator Posted February 28, 2014 The best BPS branded anything imho are thier senko style soft stick bait in the 2 tone Okeechobee color. Ive had the best luck by far down here useing those for t rig or skimming across the grass on almost every lake in Central and So Florida. Mike Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted February 28, 2014 Super User Posted February 28, 2014 i never thought a "big brand" could actually make the BPS lures. I figured they were there own brand Pradco makes almost all of Bass Pro Shops hard baits. That's the same Pradco that owns Excalibur, Bomber, Heddon... BPS soft plastics are made by a pile of different companies from Table Rock to Southern Plastics, and everyone in between. That said, they make some great baits. I fish one of their cranks an awful lot. A handful of their plastics are dynamite as well. Quote
bartdude186 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Dont care for BPS hardbaits, but their plastics are okay. Academys H2O xpress hardbaits are the way to go as far as store brand lures. 1 Quote
tnbassfisher Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 The only BPS Brand bait that I really like are the XPS Jerkbaits Quote
CTGalloway21 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 got to change to hooks so why not pay for a lure with better hooks. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 28, 2014 Super User Posted February 28, 2014 The bottom barrel bps aren't really good, but their XPS/Lazer Eye mid price stuff is hard to beat, the finishes are better and the hooks don't need to be changed out. I've used their Eggs and those took a beating on many bass and pickerel so that got me to try more. Quote
Amarley Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I like the BPS Senkos and Gander Mountain plastics in general. Good quality. Quote
boostr Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Dick's has a brand of lures? I've never seen them. Are you talking about the sporting goods store? Yep, I've bought a couple of their spinner baits, and the label will say "Exclusively made for Dick's Sporting Goods by Booyah" or "Strike King" or something like that. Quote

No kidding. I'm gonna have to keep my eye out next time I'm there. Quote
boostr Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 It will have a yellow or green tag/ hanger, and it is'nt packed as fancy as the name brand stuff. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 3, 2014 Super User Posted March 3, 2014 I guess you can say field & stream is dicks brands since they sell and use their name for baits Quote
