I am headed south march 14th cant take the ice anymore. Coming from iowa so I doubt there is any open water any closer. What lake would you sujest I go to and any tips would be great. are there cheap hotels in area?

From what I heard from someone who works at the plant, Wolf Creek will be shut down for routine maintenance starting around the first of March and will be down for about a month. So that would leave you with Lacygne. There aren't many hotels close. You could stay in Overland Park and drive about 45 minutes or Louisburg which would leave about a 20 minute drive. If you just feel like catching something you could check out Lake Shawnee in Topeka and catch some of the giant trout they stock in there.

I'm sure there's probably a hotel or two in louisburg or pleasanton. Looks like there's a hole in the wall place called stone haven lodge in louisburg if you're willing to brave it...

Yeah Wolf Creek will be shut down by then but depending on the weather it may not have cooled off too terribly bad yet. La Cygne will have soft water for sure, but the fishing has been as tough there this winter as I can ever remember, like 1 or 2 bites a day, if you're lucky, tough.

If it were me, I spend a little more on a couple extra tanks of gas and drive right on to Stockton or Table Rock where your chances are a lot better. Now if it does get a little warmer around here and the small lakes start to open up you could always drive down to the Pittsburg area and fish the strip pits. Tons of water, lots of fish, and plenty of places to stay.

Well good news for you, I got a pretty decent report from La Cygne yesterday, it was a short trip but he did well while he was there. The warm weather we have coming at the end of the week should start to open stuff up also. Some of the little lakes with clear water will start producing fish immediately after thawing. Ft. Scott is one of my favorites early in the year, but my brother in law did really well at Bone Creek last weekend before the cold weather hit. Melvern is always a good bet. If you really just want to catch fish you could fish Douglas State Lake, but if you get one over a pound it's a monster for that lake. The pits in Columbus can be amazing first thing in the spring, and if one sucks it takes 10 minutes to get on another one.
