I'm looking to purchase a new drop shot reel. I'm tossed up between the Shimano Exsence CI4+ 3000HGM or the Daiwa Luvias 2506H. I've never owned a higher end Daiwa but have a couple higher end Shimano's. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!!

They are both good reels and I dont think you would be making a bad decision either way you went. That being said you already know which one I would recommend. LOL. Anyway I would personally go on up to a Daiwa Certate 2506/2506h.

I'd like to own a Certate for sure but for this set up and my rod I'd like to stick around 7 ozs.

Depends on your budget... But you might want to look into the shimano vanquish. I have one and it's so light sometimes I forget I even have a reel in my rod. Not to mention it is a fantastic performing reel... You can find them on rakuten for a pretty good price. I was in the same position a few months ago, but picked up the vanquish instead.

Yeah I'm not looking to make that big of an investment. But the Vanquish sounds like a pretty sweet reel. Tossed up now too with maybe getting a Twinpower. They are lighter than I thought.

Before you jump on the bandwagon, a 2506 series reel is a 2000 size but with a shallow spool. The spool capacity is less than half the capacity of a regular spool and suited for either braided line or thin ( 8 lb or less ) monofilament line ( nylon, copoly or fC ).

I'm kinda leaning more towards the shallow spool idea anyways. I wont be doing a drop shot in anything more than 10 ft with it. Maybe sling a couple senkos in the shallows as well with it.

Imo, if you are only going to use it for bass I don't see why you wouldn't get a shallow spool. I'm using 6# line and have never come close to unspooling. It also saves you a lot of line.

I would go for a 2508 spool personally. Shallow spools are great, but the 06 spools are pretty shallow and unless you are going to use 6lb or lighter you might soon find the knot where you tie the line to the spool showing through on a moderate cast. The drag ratings are generally much lower on the shallower spools too. The 08 spools are just a little deeper and allow you a little more leeway.

Thanks for the tip Tim. I generally use 10 lb braid with a leader for this set up. I'll look into the 2508 size.

With 10lb braid, I'd look for a 2004 size. It will hold about 100 yards of 10lb braid. With that light of line, a 2506 or 2508 wouldn't even be "shallow."

If you're using 10lb braid you'll probably be alright with the 06 spool. If you use a bit of tape on the spool to stop the braid slipping, rather than a few yards of mono, then the knot won't be an issue. Just check that the amount of drag the 06 spooled reels can produce is enough for what you're going to do.

I've never seen any nice reels on Rakuten. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot but I filter to all catagories and havent came up with much.

I have two Daiwa Bradia 2500 JDM spinning reels and they are absolutely incredible.  I keep one with braid and one with 10lb mono and use them both for nearly any application.  I got one from the big auction site a few years ago for $150 and the other from TW for $160 when they ran a sale a few years back.  My fishing buds are amazed when I let them try this reel regarding how smooth and light it is.  It's essentially a Steez, minus some bearings and machining.  I pulled in a 40" musky with this reel with ease while drop-shotting for bass last year.  it's powerful, light, balanced, and smooth as butter.  I've had them both for 3 or 4 years now with zero issues and fish those reels heavily. I 'd recommend that you keep your eyes out for a Daiwa Bradia or a Caldia for around $150.  I still see them fairly often on the auction site.  Good luck.
