Drag Set All The Way And I Can Pull Line Somewhat Easily Is This Normal

I have a Quantum E100HPT Energy Baitcaster.  I have the drag set all the way down to its highest drag setting.  I can somewhat easily pull line,  is this normal?  Its a 16lb drag.  It makes no sound when I pull the line and does give a decent amount of resistance.  Im not sure if this is normal with a baitcaster.

Is it braid? If so, some tape on the spool will fix the issue.

Its not braid,  10lb fluro.  I think I get it,  is the fluro digging into itself and thats what Im actually pulling?

I am willing to bet the drag spring is worn out not applying enough pressure to the drag. If you have had the reel a long time and had your drag tight without ever backing off of it while storing the reel, the drag spring could be shot.  It happened to one of my reels long ago.  It doesn't sound like a spool or slipping issue especially with fluoro on it.  The other possibility would be your drag washers are way over greased.

If the line isn't slipping or digging in and the spool is indeed turning, chances are someone put the drag stack together in the wrong order, or the drag washers are shot.  I've taken my reels apart numerous times and will occasionally assemble the stack incorrectly.  The other thing that may have happend during reassembly is the drag tension washers weren't installed correctly.  They should be opposite facing  )(  or () .

If it's a new reel, take it back to your POP. They will likely either replace the reel or fix the problem.

Have you sprayed it with Reel Magic or something similar? If you have, that can work its way down to your drag washers and cause them to slip. A good cleaning and relube will fix that right up if that's the problem. Another thing could be your washers are now just worn and need replaced.During winter months far too many people leave their drag set the way it is when the reel is being used and this can cause them to become misshapen and if this happens they are basically shot. When you are storing your reels for the winter or any extended period of time its always a wise idea to clean them and loosen the drag so that this doesn't happen. Good luck....

Everyone has given good guess'.

The one sure way to find out is remove the filled spool and pull the tag end.

If the line is coming off the spool then look closely as to whether or not it is actually digging in or slipping.

If neither, have the reel serviced...

Our experience with Quantum E pt's are drags do not hold up over time....

I goofed with it a little more yesterday.  Best I can tell the line is digging in or spinning.  Its not the spool, though I havent taken it out yet.

Unspool all the line onto another reel or spool, then put a piece of electric tape around the spool, and re-spool all the line. Problem solved.

 

If the spool is moving:

Take the reel apart, take all the grease off the main gear and drag washers, then re-grease with a lighter coat of grease.

Update,  just unspooled it,  place the drag all the way up.  I can move the spool with my thumb,  sigh.......

Thanks,  I have never done this but I may as well try.  If I goof it up I got it on close out for 60.00 so money wasted yes but Ill just deal with it.  What do you use to take the grease off?

Dawn, Simple Green, Perfect Solution etc. Look online for a schematic if you don't have one. Quantums can be a bear to disassemble with that latch setup on the level wind guard.

I actually just found a place within 3 miles of me that does it.  Im just going to bring it over to them and pay the money to have it lubed and serviced and have them check

out the drag washers.  Im about as handy as a dead person.

Paper towel, cotton swab, tooth brush for the gear teeth if you want to do that as well. Taking it apart is quite easy although it looks pretty intimidating the first time. I am guessing the drag is over greased by a lot. All you really need for the drag washers is a thin film of it. Manufacturers tend to overgrease drag systems often.

I'm having the same problem with my lews baitcaster but I'm not sure if it is the line or what I'll check it out is brand new but I noticed that the drag adjustment makes no clicking noise even adjusting and no noise when the line comes out

the only drag I have that makes noise is the bb1 with a clicker drag. The rest are silent. I'm surprised nobody said measure it with a scale

99% of drags on casting gear are silent. You’re best bet is to show it to someone who is familiar with the reel or send it in.

Neither of you mentioned if it's just the line pulling out (spool doesn't revolve) or if the spool is revolving when the line is pulled out.  Different solutions.

The OP removed the line and the spool still turn easily so it’s the drag washers and disk and he is having it serviced.

Problem is solved!
