New Bps Ascend Sot Kayak Questions

so i got the bps spring fishing classic flyer and i saw they have a new kayak thats a sot fishing yak and it says you can stand up in it and fish from it but the other one for 700 has a pull up strap and this one is 549 so i was thinking with my tax return buying it but i wanna know if its true you can actually stand up and fish and cast from it if anyone knows please let me know

have not seen this one. Generally you will need a wider yak to stand in and the strap helps pull yourself up. Also younger more agile folks, like the ones riding skate boards, will find it easy. So, compare specs to others and see if it is a wide body yak. The Old Town Predator is a fairly new known stand up capable yak to compare to.

experience skate boarding will have literally nothing to do with standing up in the kayak. width and hull however will play a huge part.... it is not an easy thing to do no matter what your athletic ability and is something you must pratice again and again (easier with warm water).....

that bigger model the 128T is going to be a bit slower than the 12T.... so factor that in in terms of how quickly you want to move and how much water you want to cover....

That kayak is going to be a gamechanger at $550.

Modeled off of the 128T (flat, wide deck), you should have no problem standing up.

At the moment (until this kayak releases), you were at $700 minimum to stand up, with the Native Ultimate 12.

I have heard of the 128T having leaky hatches, so if you get it, just toughen up the seals on the lids and you should be good to go.

I fish from a WS Commander 120, and aside from being able to stand and fish, just knowing you can even get up and stretch your legs comfortably makes it worth it.

Well just as you think it has LITERALLY nothing to do with it, I believe it does. Its about balance, and if the yak isnt a stable type of yak then its a similar concept, hence the skateboard analogy, just as surfing is also about balance and similar.

yeah i know balance has a great deal with it but i mean they have the larger one and this new one which is slightly smaller in length and it says you can stand in it and i fish a crik where there is very slow to no current and ill fill small lakes where you can only run a trolling motor the larger one is 700 this one is 550 i wanted to get a ws ride but 1k is a little much when you work part time and go to school

another thing that goes along with a yak being designed to stand is a flat foot area that accomodates standing. Compare that area to a yak not designed for standing and that should tell you if it is gonna do what you want...along with a wider hull-maybe only a couple of inches-will do it

Being able to stand up in a kayak has as much to do with your size and sense of balance as it does with boat design.  To put it differently, I have friends who can stand up in their LL Bean sit-inside cruisin' kayaks.  I don't think they find it 'easy' or would want to try to fish like that, but they can stand.

 

I'm neither that light nor that limber...  

 

If you can paddle the boat before you buy, do that... You might be surprised what works for you and what doesn't.

It should be plenty stable. Has the same hull design as the 128, but shorter and shallower, thus lighter. They should already be on the floor at most any Bass Pro. I know ours has them out.

I checked one out in the store and it is just ok but for the price it is a decent deal.  As far as begin a game changer, not sure i think that but it will allow people to get into kayak fishing with a more fancy boat than in year's past.  There are two things about this boat I did not like, one was the seat.  I had a coosa so i figured the seat in this one would be similar but there was something about it that just didn't feel right no matter how much i adjusted it.  The second is the weight, that thing is a pig!!  They list it at 77lbs which means it is probably 5lbs more give or take.  To me that is a really heavy boat for something in that length. 

 

As far as standing goes, it does look as though the hull would facilitate standing easily but the area to stand isn't really that large.  It has that hatch in the middle which takes away floor space.  Also with that higher seat i doubt you will stand often anyways, it seems like the ability to stand in a kayak is the new buzz word.  I had a coosa and have a commander and could stand in both but i rarely did in the coosa because the higher seat position negates a lot of the need but it does make it easy to stand up and stretch your legs.  Now in the commander i will stand for certain presentations but generally unless you are anchored up or there is zero breeze, you will blow around pretty good if you are standing.

 

I wouldn't hesitate to get it but i would also keep your eyes peeled on craigslist because there are always deals to be had on people upgrading....including myself here i nteh next month or two lol

 

So al this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it and also i never paddled the boat, just checked it out in the store...

i used to own a Acend FS12T before I bought my Native Ultimate 12, it was a good yak for the money. It looks like they put some thought into the upgrades. it has the same hull as the sit in version (FS12) you could look for reviews of that model for the stablity questions. The FS128T is a BATTLESHIP from what I've heard and seen.

This is the best advice you're gonna get, and almost everyone who is into kayak fishing will tell you the same thing. Buying a quality used yak is far better than buying an average quality new one. I feel like the only thing buying a new midrange yak does for you is get you on the water quickly. Once you're on the water, you start to plan and save for a better yak you could have bought in the first place.

The newest version of the FS12T looks great and they have really addressed some of the downfalls the previous models had such as enlarging the scuppers, better location of hatches, adjustable foot braces, etc.  The only problem I have with them is how heavy they still are.  Coming in at 77lbs, that's one heavy kayak to try to hoist up onto the top of a car.  I have an 11.5' Ocean Kayak and it's 20lbs lighter and much more manageable to lift onto the car.  If Ascend would use medium density polyethylene instead of the high density polyethylene like a lot of other kayak companies use they use they could save some weight without really compromising strength.

I bought a cheap bathroom rug from StuffMart.  I lay it over the rear window of my car - starting just above the window on the frame and extending down to the just hang over the edge of the trunk.  (Yes, I have a small car.)  When I want to load the boat onto the car, I just lift the nose onto the rug, get behind the boat, and slide it up onto the roof.  I use a pool noodle bit to catch/roll the nose of the yak forward.  Then I insert my foam blocks, strap down, and get on the road.

 

That makes the weight much more manageable and might be helpful.

thanks for the advice everyone and it does have the flat footing area and the one for 700 is deff large and made to dance on i saw it at bps a week ago when i was there and ive been checking craigslist its just most of the yaks on there are those dicks or walmart specials or white water yaks but ill deff keep my eyes peeled thanks

I get the whole bath rug thing but to me it is not really relevant as the boat is heavy.  If i am loading a heavier boat i want some reason other than price that it is heavy.  Personally i have a trailer in mind so weight isn't as much a concern but paddling a heavy boat isn't going to be as easy as a lighter one.

 

Also as long as the handles are in the center of the boat loading is generally not an issue, at least for me.  I plan on getting a pedal drive boat in the future and i know loading it will not be easy, hence the reason i am saving for a trailer

Am I missing something? Some have said its to heavy but the Ride 115x is 80lbs and it is only 7lbs heaver than the Slayer at 70lbs
