Hi all. Did a quick search but didn't see any detailed threads about spybaiting.

I am looking to give this a shot once the great cold north thaws out. I figure this could be a good alternative during jerkbait season if they aren't smashing the jerkbaits on any given day. Anyone used these yet? I've been seeing different things on the internet about what line weight and type to use. Also, anyone know what length/action/power rod to use? I'm assuming spinning rod but correct me if otherwise.

The spybaits are count down lures so avoid heavy lines (weight and diameter wise). A 4# fluoro or 10# braid w/ 6# leader are the way a lot are going. Rod wise I'd lean toward a spinning outfit, 7'6" with  a Mod or mod/fast action. This will load nicely for long casts and help keep them hooked up.

I'm currently using a Megabass Orochi X4 Aaron Martens limited paired with a vanquish C2500HGS and 6# tatsu. I think most M or ML 7' or longer spinning rods paired with light line, preferably fluorocarbon, should be sufficient. To me the most important part of it is the light line, which gives the lure more action...

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to start with 6# carbon; I'm not sure if I would be comfortable throwing 4#. If it turned out to be absolutely necessary I would do it though. 7 foot medium or medium light spinning rod, I will have to go to Dick's and see what feels best.

They really aren't a good alternative to a jerkbait because they sink quickly, so the fish must be willing to chase at least a little for them to work. They're a good alternative to swimming a grub or paddle tail though. I've been fishing them with a 6' 8" ML/XF Shimano Crucial with a 1000 Symetre and 6lb Mustad Ultraline.

I've been fishing the Dobyns 743 for Spybaits. Setup with 6# Tatsu on a 3000 size Sustain. It works.

I run mine on a 7'2 m fast action phenix m1 with a 2500 series stradic ci4. Line is 10lb braid to a long 48" 8lb leader of invisix
