Flipping & Pitching Question!??

I am mainly a spinning reel type of guy myself. Grew up with one in hand and dont wanna change that if possible.

How will this effect me trying to use the flipping and pitching method? Am I able to do it effectively with a spinning rod?

Im new to the method but it seems real fun and like a great challenge..any Incite on this would be great..Thanks guys!

You are going to find that pitching is very difficult with spinning tackle but it can be done. The biggest challenge is going to be accuracy since with spinning equipment you have very little spool control. If you want to really want to do these techniques to their fullest potential you might want to check on getting a good baitcaster setup.

You can flip to some degree with a spinning rod but not too effectively.  Flipping rods have the first eyelet moved up on the blank so you can take more line with your free hand.  Spinning rods will not have the first eyelet moved forward, hence not as effective.  Also, pitching with accuracy will not be very possible as you will be in free spool and controlling the landing is tough with spinning gear.  Some really good spinning gear fisherman have learned over years to control the bait to a degree but baitcasting gear is a must to be above fair/good in the flipping and pitching arena.  I'm afraid to say, spinning gear just will not cut the muster for FnP.

flipping will be hard but after thinking about it it is doable. with pitching it will be very difficult to be as accurate as you need to be for pitching. again you can try it and practice makes perfect.

Flipping with spinning gear is easy, pitching is considerably harder. Both can be done with practice. The hardest part imo is finding the right equipment in spinning gear without ending up with a pool cue rod that's hard to use for extended periods of time.

You should be fine Flippin' with it, but pitching is going to be a little harder. You're going to have to learn to feather the line as it comes off the spool with your hand which is very doable and easy to do it just will take some time to train yourself enough to become accurate with it.

I learned how to pitch with a spinning reel last winter in my backyard. It really paid dividends last season because it essentially allows you to power fish a dropshot rig.

 

The basic idea is that you use your index or middle finger on you right hand to stop and release the line by pressing down on the spool.  Use your left hand to release the bail and to grab your bait when you are making your pitch. I found the key is to use a 2500 spinning real as the spool sits closer to the rod and is easier to reach with your finger. If you learn this you will become considerably more efficient with spinning gear.

 

I still think you ought to go find a baitcasting setup with a left hand retrieve and learn how to use it. Most guys that grow up with spinning reels in their hand will feel more comfortable with a Lefty. I know I sure do.

You can flip and pitch with a spinning rod though I usually use a baitcaster.  The videos below have been out for a few years, but this guy is pretty good at it with the spinning rod.  It definitely takes some practice like anything else.
