BassThumbAddict Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Hey guys! I recently got my tax refund back and was wanting to buy a new bait casting rod and reel combo. I'm looking for a rod that I can fall back on for slow moving baits. I have been considering a lews reel with a falcon or dobyns rod, but would also like to hear your opinions. Thanks fellas. Quote
Fish Murderer 71 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I hate to admit, I have several rods that have Revo stx reels and I use either 'Skeet Reese" or H2O Ethos, but for all my Shakey Head and T-Rigs I have Two 100 dollar combos- Abu Garcia "Pro Max"( AND NOT THE HANK PARKER SERIES)- I've used them with the Revo, but still have great results both in casting and retrieving an 8lbs LMB with the "Promax". I'm guessing that you want to spend some money, but I sure would rather spend mine on gas to get to different lakes in my area. Good luck in making a decision on the magic combination for you! Quote
Shadow93 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I recommend anything quantum. I've found that if you spend a little bit on a decent quantum combo, you will have a high performing rod and reel that will last you a very long time. Quote
RatCog Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I really like my shimano curado g6, but if you're on a budget the daiwa Laguna is pretty nice for the price. Quote
BassThumbAddict Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 Budget Reel: $200 Rod: $150 Also thanks for the input fellas. Quote
Arv Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Flip the prices, wait till a sale and get a lews tournament pro with a dobyns Champion Quote
carlm01 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I just bought a Lews tournament pro and will pair it with a gloomis gl2 804c jwr... Good luck there's way tooooo many options LOL... Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted February 28, 2014 Super User Posted February 28, 2014 I'd do a new Curado and KLX. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I would suggest a Shimano Crucial with a Daiwa T3-B. if you get anything other than the 8:1 ratio I would upgrade the handle to either the hawgtech or the lews carbon fiber replacement handle... Personally if I was going to spend 350 on a combo, I would go with a falcon bucoo micro with the Quantum Tour MG, (this will be my next bottom contact set up)... Mitch Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted March 1, 2014 Super User Posted March 1, 2014 It might be slightly above your budget, but the little overage would be worth it. I'd go with a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass Jig-Worm Rod. I'd pair that up with a Revo S. With the BPS reel trade in you can get one a little closer to your budget with that. If you'd like to go under the budget buy a Pro Qualifier from Bass Pro. Either way I think you'll love it. Quote
BassThumbAddict Posted March 1, 2014 Author Posted March 1, 2014 I'm going to a local tackle show today. I'll see what kinda of trouble I can stir up there. I'm hoping to buy something today. Quote
jbw252 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Before you commit, check with Ron from Valley Sports & More (he's a sponsor here at BR). You won't be disapppointed - great service & prices. Quote

You won't be disappointed - great service & prices. X2. A Tatula rod and reel from Ron would fit nicely within your budget. There are a ton of options within that price range. It would be hard to pick a 'bad' combo at those prices. TW has $70 off the Cielo 6'10" MHF. It would make a pretty good all-around rod. I am not sure what you mean by slow moving baits. My first thought is bottom fishing, but I often reel slow with crankbaits. I would drop down to a MF rod instead of the MHF once crankbaits are added to the equation. I don't fish deep crankbaits in my area. Quote
