Super User ww2farmer Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I have not had a Daiwa in a while..... I used to have a couple of the old TD Advantages, Tierra's, and had Fuego, they were always reliable and performed well. Thinking about getting a few Daiwa's again, and the Exceler has me interested. Super User rippin-lips Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I have one. What are you interested in knowing about it? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 23, 2014 Author Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I have one. What are you interested in knowing about it? Overall thoughts. But it's too late......I just bought two of them 5 mins ago....I decided to play the dumb kid tonight and ask about stuff after I bought it LMAO . The 6.3:1, and 7.3:1 lefties are what I bought. Super User rippin-lips Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I have a 7:3:1 in lh and I'll be grabbing a 6:3:1 here at some point. I don't have much on the water time with it currently. Mine personally hasn't seen the water. I used a friends for a day. I don't think you can really go wrong with it. With having torn it and a lexa apart it's basically the same reel. Flush the spool bearings and it'll be good to go. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 It's a good reel for $99.the one I have was grindy on the cast and retrieve at first but some cleaning and grease solved that easily. I use it on a Veritas winch for lipless cranks and now it will launch those baits. Once or twice the clutch reengaged during the cast and scared the hell outta me but it may be user error as I am quick to press and throw. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I've serviced several so far this winter. They are ok but not what I'me used to seeing in a Daiwa. They have a grindy feel that will likely return before the next service. Free spool was better but not the best even after servicing. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I liked the old model with MagZ and the free floating spool. It was heavy, but fished great. The new one didn't feel as good to me. Quote

They make good reels when I am wading the river and don't want to bruise up my better stuff. I like them a lot. For that price, I may buy a couple more if I just happen to see them around. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 26, 2014 Author Super User Posted February 26, 2014 These came today, and it's going to be a while before I can use them, but for the $70 (retail for $99) each I paid for them NIB with free shipping, I am impressed as one can be with a reel in this price range out of the box with no time on the water yet. They are as light as my Curado 51E's, and palm better than the Revo's I have.....especially the Gen3 STX. I like that I can adjust the magforce easily with my thumb while I am still palming the reel, I don't remember being able to do that with Daiwa's I used to own (TD Advantage, Tierra, and Fuego). They look and feel nice...........gasp......on Abu Vendetta's, and Veritas's. Super User tomustang Posted February 26, 2014 Super User Posted February 26, 2014 They are as light as my Curado 51E's, You got lead weights in your 51? Those excelsior are listed at 7.9oz. Most of my 51e's weight in at 6.95oz. I really liked the size of those 100 but it would've been better if they were just a lad bit lighter. Quote
daiwaguy Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 The Daiwa reels mentioned are all adjust on the fly Mag systems. But It sounds like you got a good deal. Congrats on the new reels. I have been thinking about gettint the 5:4.1 for some time now. Quote

Excuse me for offending your delicate senses....I guess I should have broken out the scale, measuring calipers, and called NASA for advice before making such a bold statement. 2 Quote

Yeah, I remember the Advantage, Tierra, and Fuego I had having externally adjustable mag. brakes.....what I was saying is I don't recall (maybe they did and I just don't remember) being able to adjust it "easily" with my thumb while still palming the reels. It's been a while since I had a Daiwa. The only mag braked reels I am used to using the last few years are Abu's. Quote

And have you found the Lexas you've serviced also have a grinding in the gears? Curious. I was looking at the Exceler. Have a Lexa, really like it. Quote

I have all of those reels and you can adjust them with your thumb while palming it is one of my favorite thing about most Daiwa reels. Quote
daiwaguy Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I agree with that. This has been the longest winter ever. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted February 27, 2014 Super User Posted February 27, 2014 I agree with that. This has been the longest winter ever. Not just long, but nasty....and still more to go. I got a bad feeling about March! Quote
Super User MCS Posted February 27, 2014 Super User Posted February 27, 2014 What's winter? Fished my new old model exceler this morning I like it! Quote
Mckinney24v Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I have two of the new excelers and love them for what I paid for them. The only "geary" feeling I get is in the handle, and TT mentions it in their review. Super smooth, light, and palms well for the price. Quote
