Americanzero Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 So apperently rapala is coming out with shallow running and deep running Scatter Raps. I haven't fished with one of the normal ones yet, but if the shallow runner does what it says I might be tempted! What do you all think? Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 The regular onlt goes about 5'. I guess a shollower and deeper would be usefull Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 They'll probably get me to invest in a few of each, lol Quote
fishinthedacks Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Saw these tonight. Seems like the origional scatter rap is very mixed reviews. May have to try one for myself. Shocked to see how little Rapala I have in my box. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 The original and deep runner have produced so well for me and work almost anywhere, I can not say the same for the scatter raps, nor would I invest more into their expansion of that line. 1 Quote
Justin Clark Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I have found the Scatter Rap Cranks to be a bit speed dependent. If your fishing them on to fast of the reel they can flip this happens until they hit a certain depth then they are good. I have found it best to fish it on a 5.3:1 to 6.1: reel. The Scatter Rap Shad and Minnow seem to run much better. I am really looking forward to using the Scatter Rap Crank Deep up here on St. Clair. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I'll try them. I have relaxed my anti-Rapala policy...since they are so dang effective and purty. I just know ahead of time now that if they break I have wiped my backside with the money spent on them due to their poor at best customer service. 1 Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I have gotten them replaced in the past with no issue. how old was the baits they would take care of? Had a couple x-raps that took on water, and the typical broken bill on DT's problem. 1 Quote
Justin Clark Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Had a couple x-raps that took on water, and the typical broken bill on DT's problem. I had some DT's split at the wire on me and they replaced them all but they where only a few days old. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 Had a couple x-raps that took on water, and the typical broken bill on DT's problem. I've had a bill come off of a DT Fat 3 once and they told me to send it back and so I did and they replaced it, not too bad. I always liked the Rapala baits but I really started to like them when Lucky Craft came on the scene and they became extremely attractive when the other high end Japanese baits came out. I don't know about the deep version but I know of some stump flats that I think the shallow might work well, the problem is I have square bills that work, the DT Fat 3 is incredible and if they don't want that size bait I would follow up with a Bomber square A and it hasn't failed to produce so I don't know if I need it but the tackle junkie in me says that I have to get one....Or 6. Avalonjohn44 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I don't care much for the scatter raps that I bought last year... Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I'll try them when they come out. I like the ones that are already out but i prefer others when banging into cover but as a searching bait over flats they work very well. I will also echo that if you work them to fast they will roll over at times. 1 Quote
TorqueConverter Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 It's nice that they have some new depths to the bait, but where is my big, balsa, hunting, scatter wake bait Rapala? Quote
SudburyBasser Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Pass. The Scatter Raps I do have didn't blow me away this past summer. Besides, everyone knows this summer's money wasting It Lure is the Live Target Bait Ball... Quote
bass1980 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Being up north I'm a rapala fan but the Scatter rap I'm going to pass on them. Too many times they started to just twirl in a spiral on the retrieve. They need to get a 3/8-1/2oz scatter rap so I can chuck that thing. Otherwise I'm sticking to my DT's. Quote

It looks so purty, but for the price i could buy two xCaliburs! Quote

ChrisAW Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 the one I bought only did spirals. Then you were trying to crank it too fast. I only bought a couple of these that I had found at Walmart already clearanced d**n near as soon as they were released. But after tying one on last summer, I will be buying more. These are just like any other lure. They aren't magical fish catchers. But I have found a few times, that the action has been a triggering factor when fishing it above their heads, and thats something square bills can't do without catching the bottom. But the thing that really made me like it, I never once had a fish barely hooked on this. When this is what they were hitting, they ate it. I couldn't always say the same for any other time I've been on a crank bait pattern. I would still have fish short striking and only getting the rear hook. The 40 or so fish I remember catching on these last year all absolutely inhaled it. One thing I did to help the cast-ability though is add two suspend-strips to the bottom. Added some weight, dives a little deeper, still allows them to float, but also toned down the action a tiny little bit, and made them less likely to roll at a little higher speed. Quote
MarksHooked Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I hear so many mixed reviews on these scatter raps... I fell to the hype after watching them used on a fishing show.... now I'm worried I've wasted some $ but determined to try out the ones I've bought and give them a fair go! I'm new to all types of jerkbaits, so I'll be throwing them as soon as the ice melts and play with the retrieve to see if I have problems keeping them from spiralling. Quote
mattk22 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I like the scatter raps, I have used them in a lot of places. You can’t reel them fast, and they are pretty light, but once you learn to use them they are really a bait that can catch fish. I don’t use them all the time, but it seems like they are a great bait some days when banging a crank around on the bottom isn’t working. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted February 24, 2014 Super User Posted February 24, 2014 the one I bought only did spirals. Mine did too. I bought the sinking minnow ones. Even trying to crank slow it didn't seem to run like I was expecting it to. My setup was a 7' MF Spinning outfit with 8lb FC. I am confident the setup was right ... the lures just plain did not meet my expectations. Quote
MacP Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 The cranks spun for me as well. I have lots of the shad and minnows and while I don't think they outfish their counterparts, I'd say they have their place. The hunt action on the shad is awesome. The minnows turns the versatile original into a cast and crank only. You just can't jerk it or twitch it like the originals. I'll stick with the shad. If they release a shallow shad shaped scatter rap, I'd be all over it. Shallow Shad Raps are my number 1 bait. Quote
TorqueConverter Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Shallow Shad Raps are my number 1 bait. How do you fish your shallow shad raps and why are they better than a square bill crank? I've grown up around Rapalas but I don't throw shad raps. I was more of a rattling Fat rap and risto rap guy. Quote
