BostonMahhk Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Hey guys. I just bought an 08 nitro z7 and it has 3 deep cycles in it. 2 for trolling and one for starting and other applications. My concern is whether I should replace the starting battery with a cranking battery. I talked to the previous owner numerous times and he's assured me that he's never had an issue with starting the boat up at all. I am ok keeping this battery in or should I replace it? This is my first year starting tournaments so I'd like to be issue free. Thanks Quote
BassnChris Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I believe a cranking battery and a starting battery are the same animal? Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Ya they are. That's not what I'm saying. In saying that there's a deep cycle battery being used for starting the boat Quote
BassnChris Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Sorry....I misunderstood. I think I would swap it out.......although I think the only difference is the deep cycle batteries are designed to be drained low and recharged........but that's not good for a starting battery. Quote
NathanW Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 It must turn over really easy. Thats great. I cant even get combo batteries to start my Merc consistantly. I go with a starting battery but if the previous owner didnt have issues you might be alright. Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Yea that's what I've been reading too but he said that it's been completely fine. I was wondering if anyone else ever heard of it Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I would go with a dual purpose given that it will also be running your electronics as well. Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 I think that's what I'm gonna do Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 I was told I should buy a cranking battery with at least 1000 cranking amps Quote
tritondriver Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 besides CCA you should look to get as much reserve capacity as you can in your battery. if that is the original battery its pushing 6 years and lucky to get that much and if you are starting tournaments don't chance it, I would replace all of them.. Super User Jig Man Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 What you need is dependant on your motor and accessories. I have had to go to the Sears PM-1 agm with ll50 CCAs because I have a 225 Optimax, 2 hds units, 2 lss 1 boxes and run the aerator. With the draw down 1000 CCA batteries didn't last me over 13 months. If you have an Opti and plan to fish cooler temps running the aerator all day long then I recommend you get a bunch of CCAs. Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 I have a Merc 150hp 2 stroke and have an 898 and a 597 and I prob won't be running the livewells besides during tourneys Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 I'm going to agree with the 1100cca and highest reserve capacity you can get. That diehard Jig Man posted is a good choice. They're not cheap, but also have a 3 year free replacement warranty Quote
