Soft bodied swimbait

Looking to pick up a few soft bodied swimbaits in the spring. I've thrown hollow body and hard so I'm just looking for a few recommendations. I'd like to stay around the 5" range. Thanks for the help

I personally like the Storm Wildeye Swim Shads. They have an excellent swimming action and are weighted perfectly to fish at various depths. The key to swimbaits is fish them SLOW.

Funny thing is I have heard a lot of people give these baits bad reveiws basically saying they can't catch a cold with them. I used to think the same thing until I slowed way down. Made all the difference in the world.

Mman16 I'm going to be learning a lot about these baits this upcoming season as I'm going to be comparing/ contrasting several of these type of baits. Based on my limited expierience with this lure category you should consider the 6" River to Sea Live Eye Bottom Walker, I did very well with this bait. Another bait that I tried late in the season was a medium sink RealPrey Alewife, I like it with the Perch pattern. This lure showed a lot of promise and it seems to be more durable than most. I've heard good things about the new Matt Lures tournament series baits and though I haven't fish them yet they look spectular and are well made.

Pretty much the rig I use.  Now if you're asking about bigger swimbaits, I'd say start with a 6" Hudd or a Mattlures Baby Bass.

I really like the Lake Fork Live Magic Shad. I had some great days with it this year. I usually throw the 4.5" version on the same hook as soccplayer07 mentioned.

   The Osprey is decent, the SKT swimmer is awesome(6in), Baitsmith I just dont like. Also look into the Big Hammer swim baits and heads, very under talked about and a terrific bait. The Rago BVD is also a great bait. Not sure the seze fish your dealing with in your area, but I caught a 2lb smallie and a 2.4 LM yesterday on a 6 in swim bait. I do own a ton of Ospreys, but I prefer the SKT and BVD.

You should look into the Decoy Hydra Tail Swimbait. I have a couple and they basically are a 5" Hudd with a different style tail. They sink slow and the tail kicks with a slow retrieve. Another cool factor to these baits are that most of the time when they hit bottom they land upright.

There is more to choosing a swimbait then buying one you think looks cool or you heard someone caught a good fish on. You need to think about what kind of structure and cover you are fishing around. Is it rocky? over weed beds? Are you looking for a bait that fishes fast ?or slow? One with a lot of tail kick? or a subtle tail kick? How deep are you fishing? What part of the water column are you trying to fish? With more info you can select the best bait for what you want to do.

Out of the baits you have mensioned I have used the osprey and the baitsmith. Both are killer baits. They do not have a ton of tail kick. I believe the Osprey only comes in a slow sink. Now I am assuming you are talking about the 6in baitsmith. This bait sinks 1ft per sec and the magnum is a 1ft 1/2 per sec if I remember right. These are going to get down towards the bottom pretty quick.

I found that a good weedless bait like the Missionfish from 3:16 works real well. Several sizes, and colors to choose from.

I personally prefer netbaits swimbait, they last, unlike some of the other hollowbody's I have used.  I really like fishing them on a scrounger head, which is nice because you can adjust your action and depth with them.  Owners new swimbait hook with the willow leaf is real nice as well.
