Super User bigbill Posted February 21, 2014 Super User Posted February 21, 2014 I purchased last fall all new fishing equipment. This time I bumped up to a little better quality rods and reels. I have all LEWS rods and US super caster spinning and bait casting reels. I'm very interested on how much farther I can cast from shore now into the Lilly pads. I just need that extra 25' and I'm golden. Time will tell. The extra 25' will put me in lunker city for sure. That's were these record breaking gals are hiding just out of reach where they think it's safe. "R" "U" RED. DEE for the 2014 season yet? I'm not looking forward to those mornings of getting up at 3:30am and going fishing but once I'm in the groove the thoughts of breaking the state record for LMB will keep me going. 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 21, 2014 Super User Posted February 21, 2014 I have to wait until almost end of June for bass season to start, but I've been ready since the end of the season November 30th. I usually fish for Pike until bass season opens. 1 Quote
jhoffman Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Can you not fish in canada waters until bass season starts? Thats goofy. Here a season only means you cant harvest them, which Im not worried about. Quote
Preytorien Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 You and me both bud. I got both a new rod and new reel this year, and have learned an enormous amount from BR this winter. Add to that I just got a Sea Eagle inflatable fishing boat! So yea.....I'm chomping at the bit Quote
Superdumper Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I'm in the same boat as you. Got two new set ups one very high end a powell endurance with a quantum smoke and also got a kayak!!! No longer gonna be stuck on shore looking at what I wish I could cast into. I have lily pads to I wanna fish but I'd have to double my cast length to get there. but now the kayak will take me to the promised land!! Quote
Bass2124 Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Yah, living in the cold sucks!! I start off flyfishing fishing for salmon and brook trout until the start of June when the Bass fishing starts to pick up. From that point on it is all Bass fishing. Hoping to start up earlier this year but have no clue when the smallies start to get active in Maine. The nearest lake that there is Bass is 2 hours away so I havenn't really experimented much in the early part pf the season due to the long travel. Quote

Which also you can harvest them depending on which level of fishing license you have purchased (of course this part doesn't matter to me). It is also set at a provincial level, so it is different from each province the regulations like the states. When I go for pike, I do catch bass here and there though, but you must "immediately" release them...like you can't take pics..etc. A lot of bass fisherman up here thinks the rules need to be lifted similar to what you are saying though. The bass population is very healthy in most of the waters around here. 1 Quote
FrankW Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Here in central Florida we ended the 2013 season in December and started the 2014 season in January. We have had some cold weather that keep us off the water more than usual. I was out week before last and the water temp was 58 to 62 degrees. Frank Quote

I have no interest in keeping any fish I catch (aside from Walleye up in the Kawarthas maybe) I wish we could c&r Bass here earlier in the year, but I always figured the people who made up the rules had a reason for doing so, spawning etc. As for the original topic, I too can't wait to make that first cast! Even if it is for pike if ice out happens before March 31st then that's closed until the start of May...the way I'm feeling I'd be happy to fish for perch and sunfish as long as it means trying out my new set ups! Super User Tywithay Posted February 23, 2014 Super User Posted February 23, 2014 Made my first cast today. Caught 3 crappie. It was amazing. Quote
crankcaster100 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Yep I waited until last weekend to buy my rods and reels. How did you buy your gear in the fall knowing you can't use it until the spring? I could never do that Quote
john81 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I went out for 2hours today with no luck at a local pond Quote
