Next rod/reel set up I purchase is going to be a set up for larger swim baits or alabama rigs.

Can I get away with a set up that can be used for both?

Without destroying my bank, whats a good set up people can recommend.

:) thanks!

Yes, you can.  A heavy swimbait rod with a larger sized reel (200-400 sized) can more than handle those techniques together.

Any reels you recommend? I was thinking the curado 300e paired with a iROD Genesis ii series 7'9 large swim bait rod.

I use a 7'6" Heavy, moderate-fast BPS bionic blade with an Abu Garcia Ambassaduer 6500  c3 as my swimbait/a-rig rod. Decent setup that wont break the bank. the rod is rated for weights 1 to 4 ounces, but  to me it starts to feel a little underpowered over 3 ounces so you won't be able to throw some of the larger swimbaits with it.

Lots of guys use the 300e.  You could also go the round reel route with a calcutta, cardiff, abu etc.  Other people like low profile large reels like the lexa 300, abu toro (to compare with your 300e) to pull double duty.

There are guys here who are much better with swimbaits and they have recommended okuma's big swimbait rod as a cheap but awesome stick.  I'm sure the IROD would be fine as they have their fans as well.

I'm using a pro qualifer reel on my Umbrella rig, plus it's about to go in sale.

To get out cheap look at he carbonlite rod that is about to go on sale to. Also I find the Veritas rods stiff plus there new pricing at bps is gonna be $79 either one of those should do the job and not break the bank.

I wouldn't go crazy on a umbrella rig setup just get something that can sling that weight a mile.

I'm fishing a Curado 301E on a Cumara A umbrella rig rod for both of these techniques and I'm very satisfied with the performance. Granted I fish an A- Rig a lot more than single swimbaits but I feel the rod is perfectly suited for any bait within it's lure ratings.

I've only spooled my reel with copoly for these two techniques as I'm not a fan of braid for either. I've tried it and just like the feel of copolymer better.

I feel this rod is really good in the weight, strength, and action categories but there are some guys that don't like the short grip. I got acclimated to it quickly and it hasn't bothered me.

I personally have no preference for grip styles and all that. I grew up just slamming things together and fishing so I can fish with just about any rod style. I just would like to get into swim baits and A rigs because I pretty much have something for any other set up I could throw.

The only round baitcaster I have ever liked(i had a calcutta and I used a 500 dollar one from shimano) was the corvalus lol. I actually have one strung up with 65 lb braid but its doubles as my channel cat baitcaster when I am not using it to throw heavy jigs.

I actually like the Okuma(looks wise, im a sucker for a pretty rod) so ill see if anyone near me carries them to see how I like them before I buy anything.

Right now, my most favorite stick for those two purposes, and for super size cranks, is a Shimano Crucial Swimbait MH with a Calcutta 300D.  The rod will set you back about $180 and a decent reel will be around $200 at a minimum.

Thats not a bad price, I just can't wrap my head around trying out another round baitcaster but I may see if I can find one around here to mess around with before I buy.

The cardiff has a recessed reel foot that makes it sit a little lower and a bit more comfortable. I had a 201A for about 6 years and I really liked it, just sold it because I didn't use it very often. I've got a 301A arriving today that I'm putting on a 7'10" Heavy BPS Extreme.
