conorsixtakc Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I've got an old Sahara 2500 spooled with 10 lb. high vis braid, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth upgrading to 15 lb. braid for dragging 5/16 & 7/16 oz. finesse jigs this spring. I'll be using a 7' M rod. Thanks and tight lines. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 Give it a shot, you'll know within a few fish if it's enough. If not you're only out a jig. Quote
Brian Needham Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 in more open than not water, I think It will be fine for the 5/16 but not the 7/16 so if you want to throw both I would go ahead and step it up. more than anything I am not sure that med rod is going to like a 7/16 jig either. JMO Yeah I'd prefer to have one line capable of handling both. Might just bite the bullet and step it up. Are you thinking a fast action 7' M wont have enough backbone? Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 I'm tending to agree with jig fish. Those bigger jigs seem to cast better on stouter tackle like a baitcaster. Medium spin could be used for a tube too or shakey head. I do like a softer tip to some degree on both rods for skipping but a stout butt for saying hello. Tight Lines 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 It would be fine for open hook jigs, 3/8 or less. Personally, I prefer to use 20# braid with a leader, or 6-10# fluoro. As always, let cover dictate how heavy to go. 1 Quote

If you have a spare spool, put 15 or 20 on it so you can always swap it out when you want to throw the heavier stuff. I use 10 on all my spinning setups. It's my leader that I change out, from 6-15 lb test, and I've thrown some jigs I might shouldn't have, but I haven't broken the braid on a hook set yet. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 I will fish some jigs on 10lb braid with spinning tackle.... What no body mentioned in this thread was the size of the hook wire and thickness of the weedguard. I have a lot of little 1/8th, 3/16th, and 5/16th oz. jigs with light wire hooks and thin weedguards. They work great around light cover on spinning tackle with 10lb braid and an 8 or 10lb fluorocarbon leader. 3 Quote

Light cover and chunk rock. I have a feeling 10 lb power pro will get the job done, although I may still invest in a 7' MH rod. Thanks for the feedback. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 I make a lot of finesse jigs and for my 1/8oz, 3/16oz, and 1/4oz I use 8lb copolymer, these jigs have thin weed guards and standard wire hooks but when I make the 5/16oz, 3/8oz and 7/16oz Eakins style jigs I'll go to 12lb copolymer around boat docks and moderate cover but if there is a lot of brush I'll go to 16lb but those jigs have a heavier weed guard and standard wire hooks. FrankW Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I started using 10lb Power Pro in 2000 and it is a good line. It is very limp and I was using it for light weight top water. I had a problem with the line wrapping around the rod tip or fowling on the lure. I finally went to 20lb PP and the problems went away. Frank Quote
