zachb34 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I just got one of these reels since I've heard so much about the older shimanos and it's a little tough to adjust to it's heavy, big and doesn't balance well on most of my rods. What would you guys use this reel for? Or should I sell it? Quote
The Next KVD Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'll take that reel off your hands!!! That is actually my all time favorite reel. I use mine for just about everything. I really like it for techniques I'm going to be constantly turning the reel handle such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits, swimjigs, ect. Its also my opinion that the reel doesn't balance rods at all atleast not for the most part. Adding weight at the end of the rods does more to balance them out more than anything. What brand of rods are you using? Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 One of my favorite reels of all time. I used to use them for a lot of the same as above. I use them now for spinnerbaits and jerkbaits. Love em. Quote

Super User Raul Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 Dude, you got one of the absolute finest reels Shimano ever made, I´m a Shimano fan and let me tell you, NONE of todays Shimano reels other than the Calais compares in quality to that reel you acquired. The latest, newest doesn´t always means it´s better. 1 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Dude, you got one of the absolute finest reels Shimano ever made, I´m a Shimano fan and let me tell you, NONE of todays Shimano reels other than the Calais compares in quality to that reel you acquired. The latest, newest doesn´t always means it´s better. I agree with the point that the Chronarch B is a very good reel and one of my personal favorites but I'll stop short of saying that today's reels don't compare. Shimano is all I fish so I, like Raul, really like the brand and was a little disappointed in the direction it looked like they were headed with the Curado G/ Chronarch E situation. Everything they've done lately suggests to me that they are back on the right track now and everything is right with the world. Back to the Ch B, I use mine for a little of everything. Right now I have it on a 7' MH spooled with 50# PP. About the only thing I'm not using it for in it's current state is cranking. It is a very very good all purpose reel and it can handle some serious punishment. I fish mine pretty hard and I've never had a single problem. The weight of the older, heavier reels never bothers me because that's what I started out on so to me they feel normal. The Ch 101A was actually my first low pro baitcaster and let me tell you it's no slouch either in terms of quality. I've done a few "upgrades" to my 101B; polished spool shaft ends & pinion gear, Carbontex drag, OS 7 spool bearings, ceramic pawl for the levelwind, and replaced the standard red brake blocks with 2 each of 3 different weights (green, clear, and smoke) which gives me a much broader range of brake settings. Although I have to admit that 90% of the time I have one smoke brake on and never really have any reasons to adjust them further. The reel is a very good reel straight out of the box though so all these "upgrades" weren't really needed I just like to mess around with my tackle. I fish this reel the most out of any single reel I have and don't ever see myself getting rid of it. About the only thing I'd like to change is the spool, I'd love to be able to get one that weighs just a little less than the stocker. Again nothing wrong with the stock spool as it casts great as is I'm just looking to do any and all possible upgrades to this reel because I'm so fond of it. Quote
FlipnLimits Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 An excellent reel, as most members will agree. In '94 I bought my first 100As and loved them dearly for many, many years. Used just about every Shimano since and the B is among the best of them. The wiffle spool was an improvement over the 100a and made the spool zing along. The E series wasn't very pleasing, as poster above states. The Ci4+ seems to be an excellent reel but for now I can only look at mine until the thaw. Keep your 100B, it's a brute! FL Quote
Super User South FLA Posted February 20, 2014 Super User Posted February 20, 2014 Great real for tip heavy rods and its buttery smooth, I have one left and will KEEP IT! Quote

jignfule Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 One of my favorite reels. At 9.1 oz. it is a little on the heavy side compared to many of the newer high end Shimanos, but mine has served me well over the years. If it was a 101 I'd buy it from you. Quote

War Eagle 44 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 It must be a great reel if the Conquest doesn't compare in quality! They're fantastic reels but that statement is a little far. The Conquest is certainly up to par as well as a number of other reels, my Metanium XG springs to mind. My 101B is still one of my favorite and most used reels, it's sad that these type reels aren't being produced today due to everyone wanting lighter equipment. With proper care these reels will last a guy a lifetime. 1 Quote

I think he knows that the Conquest is the highest quality baitcaster that Shimano makes and has ever made. I have owned a CL-100A and I own some Conquests and to me, they are both examples of what a super high quality baitcaster can be. That said, I will take a Conquest 50 over a CL-100A any day of the week! http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/91464-shimano-reels-calais-core/ Quote
