I have come accross a used lowrance Elite 5x at a very good price. it comes with a transducer as well.  It is a 3 year old fish finder  my question is would you take the rrisk of buying a used fish finder?  I have never owned one so I am unsure about how long they last.

Some of them have a way to check how many hours the unit has been on. Think about those ones in BPS/Cabelas that run 24-7 for a long long time. I guess it boils down to the price of said deal.

I don't care how expensive it was, originally, or how old it is.  If I could not see it working, it would almost have to be a giveaway price for me to buy it.  I've only owned cheaper ones and I wouldn't pay more than $5.00 for one of them, used.

Can he shoot you a video of it in simulation mode? Or at least still pics? and make sure the serial# isn't scratched off.

I'd check to make sure it works first, but 3 years old for a locator isn't very old. If it's made it past that long it should give you years of service. If you follow ramblers advice and not pay more than $5 for it you most likely won't be buying a working locator.

It depends on who is selling as to what I would do. I'd be skeptical unless it is like someone on this forum who has been around a while or off Ebay where you might get some backing if it didn't work.

I've sold a few here and on other forums to members and so far I haven't had any feedback so I guess they were working when they arrived.
