Fluoro Or Mono For Jerkbaits?

I like Fluoro and KVD said he uses Fluoro, so I would say fluoro is a good choice.

EVERY one of the pros at Bas University recommended monofilament for jerkbaits.

I use #12 Sunline  Super Natural.

I've been having a problem with Fluoro & Mono curling up I put it on the spool correctly. It happens when I'm casting.Has anybody got a solution to this problem.Thanks Greg

I watched an episode of the Bass Pros a few weeks back. One segement featured KVD tossing jerkbaits in the spring. He specifically said he uses flourocarbon line for jerkbaits.

Personally I use both mono and floro for jerkbaits and lean a bit towards mono most of the time. I really don't notice too much difference unless I am trying to get them to run a bit deeper then floro usually works better.

KVD said he uses flouro for jerkbaits because it has low stretch. Huh? The best tournament bass fisherman says flouro has low stretch? That information does not match what testing has shown. Does he really believe that? I agree that low stretch is important which is why I use braid and it works very well for me. Maybe the amount of stretch or even what kind of line you use really doesn't matter too much.

I only use mono with jerkbaits, I like to have a little stretch with the treble hooks and fluorocarbon is dense and sinks which can have a negative affect on the bait.

You can use either. I run 2 setups for jerkbaits, one is a baitcaster: med/moderate action crankbait rod and spooled with fluorocarbon, the rod absorbs a lot of shock and the bass stay hooked up pretty good.

 

The other is a spinning setup for launching smaller 3" jerks like a pointer 78s and x-rap 8s. The rod is just a med/fast action and spooled with Yo-zuri hybrid co polymer which is known to have some stretch. It keeps them buttoned up just as well as FC on the cb rod.

Yes. They wanted a line with a little give. I prefer some stretch with all treble hook lures.

Mike McClelland uses mono. Said he had the worst jerkbait season ever one year when he switched to fluoro. I use Flouro 10# redlable. It's got some stretch to it but is still pretty durable as long as it's somewhat fresh. I probably would use mono if lc pointers were cheaper because mono doesn't hold up well around rocky bottoms and we've got tons of rock in our lakes.

I never worry about abrasion on my line fishing suspending jerkbaits because they almost never get near the bottom.

Hmmmm.  I was watching the pros today where two of the pros explained how they fished jerkbaits...suspending and topwater.  Reason for the explainations was because both had been using them during a tournament to catch Smallmouths in KVD's home state.  One of the pros was KVD.  Both guys were using braid.  I thought at the time that went against all I had been reading.  Seems they liked if for its hook setting ability at long distance.  They liked the no stretch of braid.  Confusing, no?

I would think mono would be better for suspending jerkbaits since fluoro sinks but like others have said KVD likes to use fluoro........

not sure what line you are using but maybe try a different brand. also, maybe you want to try some KVD Line and Lure conditioner.

I dont know about arguing with KVD, but here is what raised my eye brow. Some have KVD as saying he uses fc line for jerkbaits. then that guy says KVD said he used braid for jerkbaits. seems contradictory to me...

I like mono for floating jerks like Rapalas, Long A's, Rogues, etc. and fluoro when I need to fish suspending jerks. It kinds depends on the season and where in the water column I want to fish

I use both fluoro and mono for mine. FC gets your bait down farther and has slightly less stretch than mono and but both will work.

I listen to pro anglers, but only to help me make my own decision.

Though it goes against popular opinion, I use braided polyethylene for jerkbaits.

(I specify 'polyethylene' because I've also fished with braided nylon, braided dacron & braided kevlar)
When fishing a jerkbait, I believe that braid offers 2 Advantages over mono, but has 1 Disadvantage:

Advantages:
1) Braided polyethylene is ultra low-stretch line which makes it easier to set the hook home beyond the barb,

    especially when there's a lot of line in the water (Braid is also more sensitive).
2) Polyethylene floats and fluorocarbon sinks. Even so, braid is a fine diameter line that will dive deeper
    than fluorocarbon line, which is fatter line that generates more water resistance.

Disadvantege:
Oddly it wasn't mentioned, but the stretchiness of monofilament line (be it Nylon, Fluoro or Copoly)

provides a more natural glide than braided line. Braided line produces more side flash

but creates a more spastic darting action. To help compensate for this disadvantage I use more of a tug than a sharp jerk

I am not sure where the KVD using braid rumor came from as I have been searching all the fishing shows I have DVRed looking for him saying that he uses braid.  If someone has exact show information on that, I will see if I can find it (I have quite a few shows DVRed).

On long pauses, really long pauses, flouro gets a bow in the line. I like CXX in 8 or 10# size for jerk baits. Before that, I had good success with Sufix Siege mono.
