prjavelin Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Ive been thinking about a 6'3 veritas or a quantum 6'6 both are medium fast paired with a Daiwa Lexa 100 because its a reel that can cast light lures. Any suggestions? should I pick a micro guide rod or a normal one? veritas has both options but both are shorter. Im 5'10 also i cant use a very long rod. my budget is around 250 with shipping. I think I can buy one thing first like the reel and then the other. Ive had veritas(a 7feet mh) before and I like that rod. Quote
Hogsticker Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Tons of rod options available in that price range. Have you serached this subject on this forum? So many threads if will keep you busy for a week. As far as a casting reel is concerned, you will get better performance from a T3 Ballistic with lighter baits, though the Lexa is capable of handling baits down to a quarter ounce, the T3 does it better with greater control. The Chronarch 50E may come down in price soon, and that would be my 1st choice Quote

Just chuckling atthe comment about being 5'10" and can't use a very long rod. I'm 5'5" and I love my 7' rods, but I'm assuming you mean jerkbaits in general. Even then I don't think height matters as jerkbaits overall a shorter rod is favored by a lot of people. Now to answer your question, not sure if you are limited in budget since you list Veritas ..but the best Jerkbait Rod in my experience is the St. Croix 6'6" Medium Fast. I don't know what it is, but it just feels "natural and right". I also have it paired with a Daiwa Lexa 100...great combo. Not only is it an awesome Jerkbait rod, it's a great bladed bait rod too and 3/8 oz swim jig rod. A pretty versatile stick. Most of the time though it is dedicated for jerk baits. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 14, 2014 Super User Posted February 14, 2014 I believe both BPS and Tackle Warehouse have free shipping right now if you're looking to order. Quote
Dramer77 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Yea I'm 5'10" and use a 7'1" *** black M-F for jerkbaits and lipless cranks etc Quote
prjavelin Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 I mean long rod for jerkbaits as i will be jerking towards the water. I use 7'7 for crankbaits. im gonna check how much is the chronarch, a friend has a couple shimano baitcasters and those reels are awesome Quote
NathanW Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I may get harassed by saying this but I absolutely love my 6'10" Jerkbait/Topwater Skeet Reese Teresa Rod. I do a lot of jerkbait fishing and have found it to be the perfect action. It casts like a dream and is easy to work. I also use it to swim grubs, throw some topwater and some crankbait fishing as well. Couldn't be happier. It wont set the hook on anything T-rigged so if you are looking to fish soft jerkbaits with it as well look elsewhere. Quote

Nothing wrong, there is no hard set rule that YOU MUST USE 6'6" or below or you will FAIL! Everyone has a preference. Quote

I was referring more to the Teserra line of rods. They have a pretty bad rap in some crowds... but I love my Jerkbait/Topwater Teserra. I have owned one for 3 seasons and a second one for 2 seasons and have not had any problems. They cast the light baits so well, with so much pep. Quote

I'm a bit like you though because I have a Falcon Lowrider 6'10'' MH that I have found to be a very good rod for jerkbaits. Pretty good for squarebills too. Its supposed to be a jig rod but after having it for about 7 years now, I prefer using it for moving baits. Definitely not what I bought it for, but has worked out well for those types of baits. I'm looking on atckle warehouse and bps right now and I dont see one. Once I get a jerkbait/topwater rod ill go with this model most likely. Quote
prjavelin Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 sorry I probably got confused between the vendetta 2 that does have a 6'3 or the gloomis jerkbait rod as I was checking both of those out. how good are those vendetta rods? that vendetta at 79.99 is tempting(i was using a spinning bps brawler for jerkbaits anything is better) Right now I think im gonna get a st croix Mojo rod in 6'6 at $100. its a little cheaper than the quantum smoke and I think the quality is the same. WhiteMike1018 Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I've read mixed reviews about the Vendetta rod, people seem to love it or hate it. Thing is the 6"3 model is perfect for topwater/jerkbaiting, so it might be worth sacraficing 20$ worth of qaulity if thats what your looking for. *** did a review on it, check it out if you get a chance Quote
SMB101 Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Mine are either a Shimano Crucial 6'6" Med fast and St Croix Avid 6'8" MF. Use lighter jerks on Crucial. Like shorter rod as others mentioned in not being restricted with rod position. Downward sweep. St Croix is sweet as well. Can't wait for the spring smallies Quote
Brian Needham Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 if you want THE jerkbait rod...... then you need to get the Dobyns 704cb. it will work for a shallow diver/sqaurebill rod when jerkbait season is over. Quote
