reb67 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Just seeing if anyone is out there who fishes lake Chesdin or the upper Appomattox river ( aka the old river). This is my home lake just started bass fishing a couple years ago and I have had some luck on the lake 1 or 2 fish a day. I hear stories of guys having big days but don't you dare ask for help or advice it must be top secret information. The only thing I get is the lake is stressed. The lake does go threw sever changes from year to year between droughts and very high water levels I wonder how much that effects the basses habits because where I have had luck before and where others have had luck it seems as if the fish just have moved on. Super User Sam Posted February 25, 2014 Super User Posted February 25, 2014 The lake went through some low levels due to an ineffective monitoring system on the Appomattox River by the Route 360 bridge in Chesterfield County. The water level and flow monitor was replaced two years ago and now the Appomattox River Authority dam operators can control the water flow into and out of the lake correctly. The lake needs some manor dredging down by the dam. Will it ever be done is a big question. The Authority would like to have the work accomplished but as you know, there are hurtles and obstacles to overcome before the work can progress. The Swamp may or may not produce big bass. Getting into and out of the Swamp is very dangerous and if you don't know what you are doing you can damage your boat, trolling motor and engine. I have caught a four-pounder in the Swamp but have not been back in years. Just too dangerous with the stumps and boulders waiting to eat your boat. As for fishing Chesdin you can have some great fun and catch some big ones. Get the GMCO map of the lake and study it. Then go out and fish different areas at different times and note what you catch. Be sure to watch your speed. Chesterfield County law enforcement will enforce the 45MPH law. Have fun and be sure to let us know how you do. 1 Quote
thirtysixit Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I fished Chesdin today for the first time. I was mostly looking around but I threw a frog and a square bill around the grass line and lily pads. I also tried throwing a DD22 around steep rocky points but to no avail.... The whole lake looks "bassy", I've definitely got a lot of work to do to find the big ones. Quote
thirtysixit Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 I finally got one today.... Flipping the grass line. I should have kept that up all day but I was lured off shore by a few schools of bait fish. More to follow! Quote
reb67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 This lake looks great for bass and it is but it is hit and miss and so far this year I have been on the miss side of things but it hasn't stop me from fishing it two to three times a week. I've only been bass fishing for about three years now and it is a challenge and this lake multiplies the challenge. Some days/evenings I pick up 0 sometimes 1 to 2 and then on a rare occasion like evening before last I picked up 5 in 2 1/2 hours. Like my profile said Love Hate Relationship. Quote

I'm getting that feeling from the lake too. I'm fishing it tomorrow morning... I'll let you know how I do. Quote
reb67 Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 Wife and I went out for a couple of hours this evening caught 1 dink. We went up in the old river. Where do you put in at? 1 Quote
thirtysixit Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I put in at the public ramp near the dam and fishing dock. I spent Sunday morning and early afternoon at Chesdin................. I was embarrassed yet again by this beautiful lake. I flipped grass, cranked offshore and threw a spinner bait under docks. NOTHING WORKED! I saw two chase the bait to the boat but no real bites. I think I should have spent more time on the shady side of the creeks. More to follow! thirtysixit Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 The water was 76 degrees yesterday morning. Caught a couple nice bass shallow with a lipless crankbait...... Fall patterns seem to have arrived. The creeks were FULL of shad. Happy hunting gentlemen. Quote
reb67 Posted September 22, 2015 Author Posted September 22, 2015 Thanks for the report I just got back in town hope to get on the water tomorrow afternoon Richard 1 Quote
thirtysixit Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I fished Chesdin until noon today...... The water looks like chocolate milk with about 6 inches of visibility. Extremely challenging. Only had one bite all day. Hopefully the water clears up soon. Quote
reb67 Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 At least you was on the water I was on a ladder doing gutters all day. Remember a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work. You will learn that this lake is very sensitive to climate changes. One thing to remember the rain 50 miles west of the lake affects the lake two days later and depending on the amount of the rain will determine how far down the lake it affects. I don't know where you live but I have a camper on the lake and cross over the Appomattox just about ever day if you need a lake condition report just let me know may safe you a wasted trip, but if you are like me when you decide to go fishing you will be willing to fish in a mud hole just another challenge. 1 Quote
reb67 Posted October 16, 2015 Author Posted October 16, 2015 Well after 8 straight days of work taking tomorrow off and going to try my luck on the lake. Hoping for a good day. I will report on the day tomorrow night. 1 Quote

Super User Sam Posted October 16, 2015 Super User Posted October 16, 2015 Reb, what about the Swamp? I would think it would be clear by now. Quote

Sam I didn't make it up in the old river today my motor is acting up didn't want to take a chance on getting stranded up there, how ever may mother in law and her sister fished the swamp yesterday and they said the water was fairly clear. 1 Quote
thirtysixit Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Been having some luck lately on Chesdin. As long as I can find semi-clear water I've been able to get some decent bites. 1 Quote

Very nice fish, I'd call that a good day. I fish the ponds in the area and they have been very very slow this week. Went for an hour just before dusk tonight, fish hitting surface all over but I couldn't get a nibble. Go figure. Quote

I have never seen so many shad busting the surface in my life! I didn't get a single bite.... It was still a beautiful day though. Beats a day at the office for sure. How long is the water going to stay so muddy? Any guess? Quote
68camaro Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I just got back myself, tonight was at pond 45 minutes, caught one on suspending jerkbait but lost it bringing it on shore. Before work this morning caught 13" on fat Ika in different pond. Because of muddy water I just bought a Midnight Special spinner from Strike King today, if they can't see them they might be able to hear them. Quote

They should start releasing more water later this week when they do it will clear pretty quickly, you will see a big difference by this coming weekend 1 Quote
