SGT Rico Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I got my eye on a 7' 2'' H Daiwa tatula rod. This rod will only be used for this technique. I've been using a 7'6'' abu veritas MH but It feels under powered when I throw lures over 3/8oz lures. I cannot stand a rod to be tip heavy, Ive tried to find a tatula locally but to no avail, bps, academy, none have them. What do you guys look for in a c-rig rod? What power and tip action? how long? I mainly throw 1/2, 3/4 tungsten weights with 8" lizards, Rage eliminators, or lake for tackle fork tackle ring worms . Thanks Quote
mnbassman23 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I would get a rod 7'6" or longer H action rod with a fast tip. A MH would be ok but I'd lean towards a H for dedicated c-rig rod. Quote
Diggy Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I have a 7ft6 vendetta, this could work with a reel that balances well Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I would get a rod 7'6" or longer H action rod with a fast tip. A MH would be ok but I'd lean towards a H for dedicated c-rig rod. x2 Quote
Drewski73 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I just traded in my 7'6" for an 8' dedicated C-Rig rod. I also went from an 6.4:1 retrieve to a 7.3:1 at the same time. Quote
Grantman83 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I use the DX ML jig rod. 7'8 H power. It was made for deep water jigs so I figured why not use it for c rigs and it has been excellent Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 13, 2014 Super User Posted February 13, 2014 I use a 7'6" H/F Aetos. Quote
backcast88 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I would recommend a rod 7'3"-7'6" in a MH or H depending on the brand. I personally use a 6'9" MH so my rod is a little short for a Carolina Rig but it works great. Sure I could cast a little further with a longer rod but I have caught a lot of fish on a Carolina Rig with that rod and have lots of confidence with it. Quote
motodmast Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Dobyns dx745. Which is a mag heavy rod, fast tip and is 7'4" long. You'll want a rod that is 7'3 or longer when fishing deep water. I prefer a full handle because I use a lot if leverage under my are with the rod and full cork handle to me is more comfortable. Quote
revo4life Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 for those weights you can't go wrong with the falcon c-rig rods in any line they have. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted February 16, 2014 Super User Posted February 16, 2014 I use a 7'4" H ALX Custom Dragger. I like my c-rig rod to be fairly long, so I can pull up a lot of line when I am moving it, plus better hooksets. I also like a fairly stout rod so I can use them in, around, and near cover. A rod that's not tip heavy is much more comfortable since you'll be fishing tip up. I have a 7'M Tatula rod and it balances quite well. I think either the 7'2"H, or the 7'4" Frog rod would both handle c-rigs pretty well. I would also consider a Kistler KLX. They have several models that would be good. They balance quite well and are very sensitive. Quote
Brian Needham Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 8 foot if you can find it. dobyns has a 804 Carolina rig rod. Quote
Alpha Male Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I seem to be the minority, I use a 7' MH fast St. Croix Avid Spinning rod with a Quantum Smoke 30 reel with 15lb gamma torque braid. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I dont fish C-rigs very often, But I do have a dedicated setup, Mine is a 7'6" MH/F Gander Mtn GSX tournament rod. It works pretty well, but it is not optimal, I would rather have a little slower tip to help keep the fish pegged. I would recommend a rod at least 7'6" as you most often do either a sweep set, or a reel set which these longer rods are perfect for. Mitch Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 17, 2014 Super User Posted February 17, 2014 If I ever start looking for a C rig specific rod, someone shoot me! Seriously though, just pick a fast action rod over 7' that matches the total weight if what you throw. I generally use my Dobyns DX 744c for any c-rigging. I suspect my new Pinnacle Perfecta DHC5M 731CAMH will work just as well, since it's very similar. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 If I ever start looking for a C rig specific rod, someone shoot me! It's funny you say this, because I did buy a Carolina Rig Specific rod thinking I would be a C Rigging Machine. I used it once and never used it again. I ended up selling it recently. I just don't C Rig much, but if I do, I select one of my other plastics rods that can handle the weight I want to throw. It seems to work fine for me. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 17, 2014 Super User Posted February 17, 2014 There's one water that shows up on our tournament trail that it's sort of necessary to C rig, unless you want to gamble and drop shot Lake O for smallies. Otherwise, I'd rather stick a fork in my eye. It's one rig I just don't enjoy, even though I've learned how to be successful with it. Quote
SGT Rico Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 I have an IROD swimbait .Jr rod and used it today to see how it would work. Long story short I loved it. Now I understand why people love those long rods. Quote
Grantman83 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I must be strange in that I use a C-rig a lot since I leaned to fish it before football jigs etc. When I first got into fishing I used a guide down in Virginia who fished crazy slow with a c rig and he was murdering them. Since then I am quick to go to a c rig as opposed to a deep water jig Quote
