So I am getting back into fishing and I have been doing quite a bit of reading.  I'm trying to get three rods and reels to cover all types of lures.  I will be fishing from a kayak, banks, and a boat. I have an idea of the poles and reels i need but wanted your opinions.  You don't have to give particular brands if you don't want, but i don't mind if you share.  I am just wondering about stiffness, height, casting, gear ratio, spinning.  I was thinking a 7M, 7MH I already have a 6'3 g loomis bronzeback.  I will be doing largemouth bass fishing (jigs,top water, drop shot,shakey, etc.  I just want to be covered in all areas. thanks for the help.

whoops I guess I didnt look good enough:)  so would you guys return the loomis to get a little bit longer one?

Depends on what you are fishing. I was just mentioning it because it is a good standard. I would use that 6'3" for lots of things though I would prefer a longer rod if I was fishing deeper waters.

if you can still return it i would and get a 6'8" at a minimum. a rod that sensitive though I would use for bottom contact so I would go a 7'-7'3".

What 6'6" do they have? Is it a Loomis? Not all Loomis's are created equal. Is it a MBR 782 or 783 or something else? GL 3, IMX or GLX?

I've become a big fan of Fenwick rods.  Besides Fenwick I own Airrus, Berkley, Cabela's, Falcon, Daiwa, Field & Stream, Shimano, ***. a couple customs, Abu, BPS, Quantum...think that is it.  Take a look at the Fenwick Aetos and Elite Tech Smallmouth rods.  They offer an awful lot of rod for the money.  Personally I will be adding a few more Fenwicks to my arsenal.  fishusa has the everyday best prices on these rods.

 

A friend dearly loves his 6'9" MXF Smallmouth spinning rod.  Tells me it handles light lures exceptionally well and is very sensitive.  Might want to consider that for your spinning rod.  It is one of the Fenwicks I will be getting this year.

 

Be sure to post back on what you decide to get, and then give us a review of your thoughts on the rods once you have had a chance to fish them.

I believe its a specific rod a worm and jig is all it says. I was thinkin about getting there casting rod. Do you guys recommend them (its an imx) or something else for casting?

Really it's up to you. I would use a 6'3" for topwaters and plastic worms. I have rods from 6'6" to 7' and prefer the shorter ones for most of the fishing I do.

If it were me I would have at least one rod in the 6'-6'6" length, especially if you're in a kayak and from shore.  The reason I say this is because you may have to cut through some brush to get to where you want to go and also a shorter rod is generally better for accuracy instead of distance.  I have a few rods over 6'8" but don't generally fish them as I wade and am more concerned with accuracy (not getting lures hung up on the banks) and ease of cutting through the woods.  Rods and reels are completely subjective to the individual fisherman and that's one of the factors that makes this sport so fun.  Anyways I hope this offers some help and you end up finding what you're looking for.

Don't worry about the labels man. A worm and jig riod equals an all purpose rod to me. You would be surprised at the fish you can catch on a rod when you forget about the labels.

You should find out if it's a medium or a medium heavy.

If I were in your position, knowing what I know now my choices would be:

 

MBR783 - 784 IMX ( trigger )

CBR785 ( crankbait specific )

SJR782 IMX ( spinning )

 

With those 3 rods I can fish most baits ( except for the heavier swimbaits ) in the most places.

 

Of course I own more than those cuz I´m a tackleholic and a victim of The BaitMonkey.
