WhiteMike1018 Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 This is impossible for me to do....my split ring pliers are either too big or im just really bad at it. Either way somthing needs to change...are there any split ring pliers out there aimed at changing the smaller split rings? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 How small? I modified a pair by filing a cut in the bottom section of the pliers to hold the ring. 1 Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 Pretty small, i mean i wouldnt say the smallest..maybe a step up...its some really small popper about an inch and a half long with really small trebles and rings..and even when i usually get the small rings on or back off they are mangled up some from me trying to get them on for so long Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted February 12, 2014 Super User Posted February 12, 2014 Get a pair of Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers, they handle small rings very well. Best split ring pliers on the market, bar none. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 12, 2014 Global Moderator Posted February 12, 2014 Fingernails man, fingernails. That's the only way I can get split rings on tiny trout and crappie cranks open without ruining the the split ring. All you have to do is get them started, then use forceps to remove them. Sometimes you can get them open with just the forceps also. Quote
Rivers Edge Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Fingernails or you could also cut them off with a good pair of side cutters. Wear eye protection. Those little piece can fly anywhere. 1 Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 12, 2014 Super User Posted February 12, 2014 To echo Jrob78 - Texas Tacle split ring pliers - they are the best I've found. In many cases, there isn't any substitute for using the right tool for the job and this is one of those cases. They ain't cheap, but they aren't horribly expensive either and they will last until one of your buddies "borrows" them and they don't come back. Get the smaller, orange handled ones. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 12, 2014 Super User Posted February 12, 2014 Texas Tackle pliers are the smallest I've run across... I used my dremmel to reduce the size of my pliers' tip end to accomodate smaller rings. oe Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 12, 2014 Super User Posted February 12, 2014 Fingernails or small pen knife, just twist the blade a little to widen the ring. Quote

KDW96 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I have had the same problem. I got a pair exactly like the ones Sieberts posted, but you can get them at hobby lobby. My wife said you can print a 40% off coupon on one item. I ended up paying 5?dollars for them. I may end up filing like sieberts has? Quote

I've yet to lose a ring since I modified it. It does not take much either. Quote
