So i becha guys heard of rod building. I was looking online for a rod to get for this wonderful season ( thanks to bassresource) but i could not find a rod that is ideal for me. I wanted something that is my extension, so if i got to ask one question, do i feel lucky?? Haha just kidding but anyways i sai to myself why not make my own rod, so ive been considering this and i am willing to do it, if i become good at it, i will do it more, but i have a question thats really bothering me. How do you allign your guides to your reel seats so its perfect? Is there an alternative for rod turners? How challenging is this? Who has experience? What is it like. Thanks guys, because of you guys you helped me earn money forthis, and i appreciate it. Looking forward to the season, tigh lines

You have to align everything with your eyeballs.  I use dental rubberbands to hold the guides on while I wrap them.  You can adjust them until you get them where you want them.  You can also tweak them a little bit after they're wrapped and before you apply finish.

As far as how hard it is, it depends on how good you are at doing stuff with your hands.  I should say, building a fishable rod isn't hard at all but getting a "perfect" rod with "perfect" elaborate wraps and finish is quite difficult.  It just takes a lot of practice and a lot of patience.

Go to Rodbuilding.org and read everything you can.  There is a lot of good info out there, you just have to look for it.  Once you get a good base of knowledge and have more specific questions, we can help you.  Rod building is a lot of fun and very rewarding, it isn't for everybody though.  Don't expect to save money doing this, you won't.  Also, you should probably post in the tackle making section.

ALX makes my custom rods and the site sponsor DVT makes custom rods, check them out first.

Rod building is a rewarding craft and can be addictive. There is a definite learning curve though and some investment, although you don't need to break the bank. If all your looking for is a rod or two of a particular design, you're probably better off having one done for you. Which ever way you decide to go I'll be happy to assist in any way I can.

I've built a few but I absolutely hate wrapping the guides. Am awaiting a quote from DVT on having him build my next 2 rods. If I was you I'd either get a MHX rod kit or at least a MHX blank to build on.

Learn static guide placement for a casting rod or the concept guide "system"? For a spinning rod.

And build it on the spine.
