bmac31 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Hey everyone, sorry if some of my questions are stupid i'm fairly new to bass fishing and doing my best to learn. I was wondering if i could use a size 40 spinning reel for bass and if so what kinda presentaion. Brian Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 9, 2014 Super User Posted February 9, 2014 It will be fine..........bigger and heavier than it needs to be, but it will be fine. I prefer the 6930 size. Quote

21farms Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 40s are huge but you can definitely use it for bass. i use a 9530 and think it is perfect but i know some people like the bigger spinning reels to help balance the rod, the stronger drag, and the bigger spool which helps some with line memory and twisting. fishguy613 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 the 40s are huge reels, i use a 30 size on my spinning rods and its perfect, same as shimano 2500. I grabbed a 35 by mistake once and felt it was way too big Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted February 10, 2014 Super User Posted February 10, 2014 If you already have it....use it. If you are still shopping - most folks, including me, will be recommending the "30" size Pflueger as the sweet spot for bass fishing. Quote
Super User Marty Posted February 10, 2014 Super User Posted February 10, 2014 I grabbed a 35 by mistake once and felt it was way too big I bought a 35 last year and I'm pleased. It seems similar to the Daiwa 2500s that I'm used to. Quote

Funny, I bought a 35 a couple years ago and now wish I had gotten the 30 because I find the 35 kind of bulky and heavy. I guess its just personal preference. Quote
Super User MCS Posted February 10, 2014 Super User Posted February 10, 2014 I have a 40, 35 and 20 size reels. My 40 doubles as my inshore reel. It doesn't bother me one bit. The 35 size balances with rods a little easier but the reels are great. I can run plenty of 10, 12, 14 mono or 30# braid on these. Pretty much do anything you want with it. Fish weightless plastics, Texas rigs, topwater, lipless. It is all preference if your used to small delicate reels or have dainty hands then you might not like it Quote
RandySBreth Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I'm sorry to the other guys but a 40 size reel isn't "HUGE" - it is a size bigger than most bass guys use but it isn't like you're using some giant offshore tuna reel or something. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 10, 2014 Super User Posted February 10, 2014 If you already have it, go ahead and give it a shot. If you're looking around, I'd try to find a 20 or 30 size instead. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 10, 2014 Super User Posted February 10, 2014 Nothing wrong at all with the reel but I would not want it for bass fishing in the 40 size, given the option I'd go to a 30 size. IMO there is more to a reel than just being smooth, one important factor for me is what rod I'm placing it on. I own 6 Pfluegers and each has been an impeccable performer. President 30 is 8.3 oz with 25" IPT Supreme mg is 7.5 oz with 30" IPT, I personally like a reel with a bit more line recovery. Quote
bmac31 Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Thanks for all the advice guys. ill probably throw it on my st croix tide master and use it for saltwater. Quote
masterbass Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I have the same reel. I bought it a couple of years ago when my interest in fishing started to become an addiction. I wish I got the 30 instead, but I still use it for everything bass fishing. I go to south carolina for vacation and do some inshore. It is fantastic for pulling some reds out of murrells inlet.
