So what do you prefer in a good solo? A screaming, fast, metal solo?; more a bluesey feel?; long, drawn out own-the-night type of thing?

Although I respect and admire any talented, well put together solo, I would say this is my bag baby: (@ 2:35)

I especially love the 2 lead, dueling, harmonizing type as in that song.

And although Poison always kinda got a bad rap, the solo in this one is also well put together. CC Deville described it as his favorite: (@ 2:33)

And I'll just leave this right here:

Again, more the fast, metal, clean, accurate type

So, what does it for you? Judas Priest and Iron Maiden or BB King and Eric Clapton or do you go for the likes of Jimmy Page? Me' I love em all.

Wow, that's tough. Kind of like bass, whichever one I currently have on is going to be my favorite.

From that guitar-god era, I always thought Slash of G'n'R and Kirk Hammett of Metallica wrote and performed solos that went somewhere. But I'm also a Wes Montgomery fan. And where do I put Frank Zappa? And Neil Young's one-note solo in "Cinnamon Girl" is good one, too. This is big can of worms, man.

How about a Willy Nelson guitar solo or Aker Bilk's "Tellstar"  Any Louis Armstrong trumpet solo. Pete Fountan on the clarinet. A sax solo by Kenny G. The list goes on and on, but, I'm showing my age. I have no idea who the previous posters are talking about.

My word!  That Judas Priest thing just blew the batteries out of this 72 year olds hearing aids.

I am much more into things like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.

But everyone is entitled to his own likes.  You guys enjoy it.

lol...Well I'm glad you got the full effect of it!

And just for the record, I'm a big Dwight Yoakam, Garth, Shania fan too. And Martina McBride is in my handful of best female vocalists on the planet.

I can't name them all, but that song, I Dreamed I Was In Hillbilly Heaven, names most of  the ones I like.

I personally don't care for soloing, though I do get inspiration from Gil Evans era Miles. Sketches of Spain being the pinnacle of that collaboration. If I had to pick, Hackett's work in Firth of Fifth is groundbreaking. Being primarily a drummer, I get a kick out of Neil, simply because he keeps it linear and articulates to the point that it's not to hard to emulate. Tony Royster Jr. absolutely amazes me. Jaco's Continuum is another that inspires.

Same here.   Put my MP3 player on random play and it is all over the place.

Mine goes from Satchmo to Etta James to Hank 3 to Slipknot to Black Sabbath to Sinatra to Buddy Guy and so on. Even got some Snoop Dog in the mix
