360 Light On Bass Boat

I do a lot of night fishing and I've seen a lot of people mounting the 360 white light on there engine hood and was wanting to know how I go about doing that

Perhaps a cheap camping lantern and duct tape.  Or do you mean a black light?   I don't know, but I could imagine a white 360 degree light on your boat turning into a flying bug magnet.

I would suggest that you review your particular state's Rules & Regulations regarding required navigational lighting and simply follow them.

Most states follow USCG regulations, and those regulations state that, at the minimum, your vessel must be capable of displaying a white light (e.g. a flashlight) to near-by vessels.  If you are at anchor, you must display a 360 deg. white light.  Most of the larger sporting goods stores carry the items you need, from the very simple domed flashlight, to the light mounted on a pole.  As A-Jay said, check your State regulations.  Regardless, of the rules, I suggest you do everything you can to ensure the visibility of your boat, especially if you are fishing a body of water that allows powered water craft.

I have done it two ways.

The first was when I was not sure I was going to much night fishing with a partner.

I used a white dome light like the red and yellow ones that truckers decorate with.

I attached it to a large suction cup used for auto roof racks. Just stuck it to the motor hood.

The permanent one was a surface mount anchor light pole cut down to about 8 inches.

In both cases I just paralled the boat anchor light receptacle and used quick disconnect terminals on the wire at the motor so I could remove the hood when needed.

I do not have that boat anymore.

BPS used to have the''pancake'' type 360 stern lights on a pole that plugged into a deck flush mount recepticle. I have one and I love it for night fishing as it does'nt shine directly into your eyes like the old style lights did. You may be able to modify it to suite your needs if they are still available.

I think most states require one for night and low light conditions. Some states will mandate the lite at a certain height above the boat, some will just say it must be visible from 360 degrees, so check your state boating laws on the placement of the lite. As for mounting it on the motor, you would just secure it to the top of the motor, and put a quick connector inside so you can unplug it to take the cover off. You would have to run the a positive wire from the lite switch to it, the negative wire can just be connected to the metal on the motor somewhere. Just make SURE you have it routed and secured in a way it can't get into the flywheel. There are some cheaper ones around also.

Now, with all that said, I personally would not want it there because it's too low and the lite will be bothersome. I like mine up high enough so it's not putting white lite in the boat and I'm not looking into it when I look back to make sure it's clear to make a turn etc. Nothing like a little white lite to destroy your night vision. If you do much running at night, you will see what I mean. My favorite one is one I think was made by Perko (I've had it for years so wouldn't swear to it) and puts almost no light in the boat and you barely even see it when you turn to look back but gives off plenty of light and is easily seen by others, but it mounts on a pole.
