Preytorien Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I've got a new reel that I'd like to put braid on. I just wondered which brands and types of braid have coatings on them. I ask this because I got some KVD L&L and they recommend not using it on coated braid. I have previously used Sufix 832 and Power Pro, both braids I have great success with. Do either of these braids have coatings? Would you recommend a different braid (non-coated) over these? Any tips on appying the L&L other than what the website recommends? *Just as a note, this will be mostly a heavy cover jig/frog rod which is why I prefer braid Thanks! Quote
Mike2841 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Just curious about the benefits of line conditioner on braid. I know most people use it to help manage the line, but I use braid on all but one of my setups both spinning and casting and never had an issue with braid. Quote

OkeechobeeAngler Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Stick with the original Power Pro. Quote
Preytorien Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Stick with the original Power Pro. Eh.....I was thinking that. I just also have used Sufix 832, but it seems to be more stiff. I didn't know if that was due to a coating or something Quote

But I can't objectively say I like one over the other since I've never had a failure with either. I've had Spiderwire fail, kind of disappointed there. But my question was more of one that dealt with which one would work better with a line conditioner, since most of them say their best application is on a non-coated line. Heck maybe I'll just save my money for the BPS Spring Classic and buy a spool for both and re-spool BOTH baitcasters this year! Quote
Super User Scott F Posted February 4, 2014 Super User Posted February 4, 2014 If the braid has any color to it, it's coated. As that coating wears off, the coloring can stain your reel. Quote
Bass2124 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Why use conditioner if the line is coated? Isn't the whole purpose to cast further? Why not just buy coated line? Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Keep the conditioner for your flouro/mono. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted February 4, 2014 Super User Posted February 4, 2014 I use KVD conditioner on both PP and 832. It definitely softens the coating faster. After its softened up to where I like it, I don't use conditioner that often, as I don't really see much of a benefit. It really doesn't take long for either braid to limber up to where it should be. 1 or 2 outings of frogging for me has it in prime shape just the way I like the braid to be. In the end KVD LL isn't going to harm your braid, at least not that I'm aware of and I've been using it for years. Its like Frank's Red Hot Sauce, "I put that shizz on everything." Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 4, 2014 Super User Posted February 4, 2014 I don't think line conditioner is or was intended to be used on braid. If you want a stiffer braid than suffix 832 try the original suffix performance braid. Good stuff & less expensive than some others including the 832. 1 Quote
