rockfish Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I'm on a spinnerbait high right now. Been killing em the last few weeks here. Big ones too, when they explode on one and almost take the rod out of your hands there's no better feeling. In fact I'm almost fishing spinnerbaits only now, and I keep it pretty simple. All white Colorado blades half oz White and chartreuse 3/8 oz willows. White and red 3/8 oz willow. I just vary the retrieves just like any other lure, slow, burn em, twitch em, stop and go til I figure out when they'll hit em. Quote
Hattrick7 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Your confidence in the bait is all but destroyed. I would try and find a small pond where there's minimal pressure and just get bit. Even if it's a small one it'll really turn your confidence around 180 degrees. I've found that there are ideal spinnerbait conditions and maybe not so ideal. It usually seems when there's some cloud cover and a little chop is when i normally get hammered on it. If your fishing from a bank, make sure your fan casting. Even parallel close to the bank. I usually put on a single grub trailer for added action. The thing about spinners which is cool is that you can really fish it at different depths. I would try a slow retrieve at different depths. Making it look like an easy meal is usually too hard for the bass to resist nailing it. Good luck you'll eventually get bit! Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted February 5, 2014 Super User Posted February 5, 2014 First you have to feed the spinnerbaits hook your own blood as a sacrifice. Then the fishing gods may smile upon you Quote
Alpha Male Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I love spinnerbaits. You need different tactics for your retrieve...like others have said. They are virtually weedless so can throw them into some of the medium cover. My favorite is to throw them into the rushes and get the line to bend over some of the rushes and the spinnerbait nearly comes out of the water and back in silently. I have gotten so many strikes like that. Quote
tholmes Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I catch quite a few bass on spinnerbaits. One of my favorite tactics is night fishing with a 3/4 oz. black spinnerbait with a single, soup spoon-sized Colorado blade.Absolutely heart-stopping strikes. Tom Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 i never caught a lake bass on a spinnerbait, but have caught plenty of pond bass on them. Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 An inline spinner can be deadly for river smallies Quote
dday07 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Only time i do well on spinners is in the pre-spawn..any other time it's tough Quote
Jon G Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I use to catch them on a spinnerbait all the time but now i cant. Instead of throwing a spinnerbait now days i just throw a chatterbait and that will always work instead of the spinnerbait Quote
Lip 'em! Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I use to catch them on a spinnerbait all the time but now i cant. Instead of throwing a spinnerbait now days i just throw a chatterbait and that will always work instead of the spinnerbait I have had the exact opposite experience as this! LOL Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 i never caught a lake bass on a spinnerbait, but have caught plenty of pond bass on them. Interesting to know that. I started fishing for the first time last year. I did most of my fishing at a state park lake, bank fishing. I tried spinnerbaits and did not get any bites. I did catch a good number of bass using plastic worms and lizards. Later in the summer I started fishing at some smaller lakes/ponds at a club I joined and only caught two bass in later summer. But I will admit by that time my main lures were plastic worms. Why use anything else when plastics work so well and others don't? Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 This is my one year newbie opinion of spinnerbaits. I'm going to throw spinnerbaits in with jigs too. Last year was my first year of fishing since I was a kid. So I watched all the bass TV shows and read on the magazines and watched all the videos on Youtube and read some forums. I learned some great stuff. I saw lots of videos and talk about people using the great spinnerbaits. So I tried them over the summer and only caught two bass on them while bank fishing. When I finally caught my first bass on a spinnerbait I was ready to celebrate. Yeah! I caught my first bass on a spinnerbait! Then I got to thinking - why am I celebrating? My worms and lizards have outproduced my spinnerbaits and jigs on a large scale. And, in my opinion, I think I used spinnerrbaits and jigs enough that I should have caught more than four bass with them! So my one year experience has led me to this - in my opinion, all the lures are over rated except soft plastics. But this is fishing and it's a hobby. So if you want to try and catch bass on spinnerbaits, go for it! . Quote
bass1980 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 September up North is a great time to use spinner baits with the cooler water. However last year I too didn't do well on spinner baits. I have been throwing more swim jigs and loving it. 1 Quote
