BassAssassins14 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 What is a good air compressor that will not kill me on money. ? I have a iwata neo air brush Quote
BobP Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 The best bang for the buck is to buy an inexpensive tool compressor, add a moisture trap and a pressure control/gauge if needed. It's good to have at least 30 lbs of SUSTAINED pressure available. Airbrush compressors are smaller and typically have a sustained pressure that is 15 lbs less than their advertised pressure, which is the MAX pressure. So if you buy a Chinese compressor that says "35 psi", the pressure will be down at around 20 psi a second after you hit the trigger on your airbrush. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 4, 2014 Super User Posted February 4, 2014 Buy a compressor with as big of a storage tank as your wallet/work space can afford. You wont regret it. Fill the tank up and then you have a longer supply of compressed air before the compressor kicks on to fill it back up. I bought a Husky air compressor from Home Depot for around $100, I don't remember exactly but I think it has around 2-3 gallon tank on it. So the compressor only kicks in a few times during painting, and it usually when I spray liberal amounts of air and water through my airbrush to clean in between paints. Quote
tbone1993 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 My dad has a craftsman compressor valued at over $400 that came with $100 worth of nailers that he got for $150 on sale. Its a 5gal tank I believe. We have a 25 or 30 gal in the garage. It may even be bigger than that idr. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 4, 2014 Super User Posted February 4, 2014 What you need can be found at Harbor Freight, there are compressors that range from $40 to $100 that will work for you. The cheaper ones have small tanks, they are a pain as they keep turning on every minute to build up air, for air brushing I would get at least a 2 gallon tank and you can get an oiless one that big for around $80. If you plan on it being decent then you need to spend at least that much, I use mine pretty hard and it has lasted over 10 years and all you need to do is keep it clean, it will come with an air hose, tire chuck and regulator, just remember to open up the moisture port of the bottom of the tank after every use and you'll be fine. Christian M Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I've got a 20 gallon oil-less Husky compressor from home depot that I got on sale for $150. It fills up then doesnt kick back on for at least 30-60+ minutes depending on how much air I'm using. The most important part is to get yourself a good moisture trap, without it all the condensation from the tank will come through your brush. 1 Quote
Pete-K Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Used the spare tire off my boat trailer for a long time. And it lasted a long time. I now have one of the Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/air-compressors/3-gallon-100-psi-oilless-pancake-air-compressor-95275.html Uses it all the time even tough I have a 20 gallon and a 30 gallon compressor. But these smaller ones allow me to load it up and take it with me for other uses. Pete Quote
Vzwire Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 +1 on Harbor Freight air compressors. I've had mine for about 3 years no issues. Loud though.... I recondition/restore classic arcade games. I use the compressor to quickly spray paint the machines. I have the Central Pneumatic 2hp 125psi 8 gallon....works flawlessly. Quote
