CPBassFishing Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 For you guys using devcon- what ratio of epoxy to denatured alcohol are you using? Thanks in advance. Quote
cadman Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 To me if it is warm enough, I would not thin Devcon. JMO. From what I've heard, it is one drop just to thin, not to make it soupy. Also, if you thin it you will have to put it on a rotating wheel, to definitely keep it from sagging. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 I never thin it, I did try it a few times and it develops bubbles and Cadman is correct, you need a drying wheel. The reason I was trying to thin it was I wanted to use a large amount in 1 batch rather than working with multiple small batches and it worked but I had a lot of bubbles and I worked with it to correct the problem but I was never able to solve it so I just use small batches and leave it alone. What i'm worried about is having it dry with a very lumpy finish from being brushed on and spread around like 5 minute epoxy does Quote
cadman Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 is devcon like regular 5 minute epoxy or a lot thinner? What i'm worried about is having it dry with a very lumpy finish from being brushed on and spread around like 5 minute epoxy doesYes it has the viscosity of 5 minute epoxy, but DO NOT use the 5 minute epoxy, as it turns yellow very quickly. I use D2T on my jigs and the finish is flawless. It is ready to fish in 24 hours, however I would wait at least two days. JMO. With epoxies, the warmer the area you are working in the easier it is to apply and the more it stays liquid longer. So if you are working in a garage and it is 45 degrees in there, you will be pretty hard pressed to get any kind of good coverage on your bait, because the epoxy will be very stiff. So I would suggest you do this in your house. The D2T has no smell. Working in the house, you will get excellent coverage, and Devcon is self leveling. What that means is that all the brush strokes will disappear. Also don't over brush it. Brush it on , see that you have complete coverage and let dry. I occasionally look at my jigs to see if anything is dripping. However I do not use a lure turner on my jigs. Also when you use it. squeeze out only what you will need in about 10 to 15 minutes. Once you mix the two parts, a chemical reaction starts, and the epoxy starts it hardening process. So don't do a lot at one time because you will never brush it on as it starts to harden. There are some short cuts as heating it and so on, but it would take me too long to explain. If you need more help PM me. Quote
BobP Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I mix the D2T for 2-3 bass baits, then take my 1/4" wide artist's brush, dip it in DA, and shake a few drops into the mix. Stir it in, add a little more if needed until thin enough. It will make the D2T more brushable, extend the brush time by a minute or two, and help it expel any bubbles - but will still cure to touch in about 5 hrs on a lure rotator. 1 Quote
cadman Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 If you are going to thin it, BobP is correct. Use denatured alcohol. I have heard bad results from guys that thin with acetone or lacquer thinner. Quote
cadman Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Where do u find devcon at? My Ace hardware has it, however, I buy the bigger bottles at Tower hobbies on line. Much cheaper that way if you are going to use a lot of it. Quote
jbass Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 This is a site where you can get D2T in "bulk", 9oz. containers. Just click here. EPOXY Jerry Quote
