Jon G Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Late last night at around 3 a.m i thought it would be a good idea to clean a reel right before bed. Needless to say i stupidly stripped a screw pretty bad and can not get it out. Normamly i would just drill the screw out but since its on a reel i obviously cant do that. So does anybody know how to get them out? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Have you ever used an 'Easy out'? I'm not sure how small they come but that's all I got off the top of my head. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I have heard that if you drill it out with a drill bit that is smaller than the screw itself, and just go down the middle of the screw that you can pull the sideplate off with a bit of force and then remove what's left of the screw. I have never tried this before so can't comment really. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 if it is a metal sideplate you should be able to use the smaller drill bit method to get it out, if it is a graphite side plate i dont have a clue. Mitch Quote
Jon G Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Yeah it is graphite. The reel is a Chronarch. Who knew one little screw could give you so much hell lol. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 Put some JBweld on the damaged head of screw once it starts to harden form a slot with screwdriver then when it has hardened unscrew it. Now dont get the JBweld any place but the head and you will need new screw anyways. Ive done this with rc cars/trucks engine mount screws. 2 Quote
Super User .RM. Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 Who knew one little screw could give you so much hell. Any one of the pro service techs here would.... Also why we don't do anything on reels late in the evening... I would recommend you send it off to Shimano, they handle that problem all the time and would have the proper way to remove/replace the screw... Good Luck & Tight Lines! 1 Quote
DelcoSol Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Use a small spring loaded center punch to break the screw loose by punching counterclockwise. Either that or if you can get to it Dremel a slot into the screw and use a flat head to get it out. These methods work on cars all of the time. Good luck. Quote

I have some laying around so i well try this but should i mix the black and red bottles still or just use the red hardener bottle because all i need it for is to quickly remove the screw not for it to stick for a long period of time Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 I dont know about just the hardener. My way pretty much will mean you need new screw, chipping the epoxy off might not happen. Quote

I've just bought a used Curado 200E7 and had one of the screw head stripped which I didn't realize until I started taking this a part. And also are these screws something you can buy from local Shimano dealers or am I wasting time looking around locally? Quote

plural_of_fant Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Look for a product called screw medic. Its a small dropper bottle with fine particles suspended in a viscous liquid. A small drop and a good screwdriver works wonders. If found it works best with Phillips head screws. The stuff works and a bottle is only five bucks. So its worth a shot.. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 nope i couldnt get it out you can by a screws from shimano for about a dollar Oh no! I was about to buy dremel and take the head off. Have you tried that route? For the screw, I called Shimano and they sent one free of charge. (Still waiting). Look for a product called screw medic. If you have one, where did you buy it? Quote
plural_of_fant Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Don't remember where I bought it.. sorry Quote
hatrix Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 The jb weld might be the best bet. Just put a bit on with a toothpick and get a small bit in there before it sets up. Also cutting a little slot with the dremel isn't a bad idea either. You could just rip it apart. You probably didn't need that screw anyways. Quote

Oh so you are basically suggesting to just glue a screwdriver to the screw? Quote

Fine Valve grind compound works also, find it at any hardware/auto store... Quote
hatrix Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Oh so you are basically suggesting to just glue a screwdriver to the screw? Pretty much that's the idea. The stuff take like 24 hours to fully set up. If you can find that screw magic stuff people are talking about try that. I have never heard of it so I can't comment. But jb weld or some kind of serious epoxy will glue anything together. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted March 25, 2014 Super User Posted March 25, 2014 this tool might work http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-pc-screw-out-174-damaged-screw/p-00952154000P Quote
