Knots For Crank Baits

The more I fish the more I realize how important the right not for the right application is..... and how big of a difference it can make.  I personally like to tie a Palomar not when I am crank baiting because it allows the bait to move free, and is a relatively strong know.  I was just wondering what you guys thought about my design and please feel free to correct me I am trying to learn as much as I can.  Also what knots do you guys use for

 

• Crank baits   
• Texas rig
• Spinner baits
• Froggin'
• Drop Shoting

There are a few variables to consider before selecting a knot.

1. Type and strength of the line.

2. Type of hook or is another factor.

Palomar knot requires a larger loop the pass the lure through. This creates problems snugging the knot tight without over heating the knot and keeping the double line organized so it doesn't cross over itself, severely weakening the knot when cliched tight. The double Palomar knot is making 2 overhand wraps in lieu of 1 for the standard knot and improves the knot when using braid.

I like the Palomar knot for tying direct to hooks or clips using mono line.

Improved clinch knot or Trilene knot is a good knot for larger lures, spinnerbaits and tying direct to split ring lures like crankbaits when using mono line.

San Deigo jam knot is what I use for FC line, all lure and hook types except heavy wire hooks. Heavy wire hooks with FC line I use the double SD knot; 2 wraps through the hook eye.

Braid I like the old braid knot; double line clinch knot.

I use the Trilene Knot for every line to lure no matter the line type. Double uni for tying leaders.

I've gone back to tying the Palomar for just about everything.  I will use a loop knot for certain topwaters though.

Majority of the time I use Palomar knot. Spinnerbaits use Trilene Knot and at times will use loop knot when tying direct to lure without split ring.

Considering the fact that most of my setups are braid with fluorocarbon leader. I use the san diego jam for just about everything except cranks which get the rapala.

Since I use a duo lock for my cranks (size varies on crank size) I pretty much stick to a good ol Trilene knot with five wraps and it has done me well. Used to use the palamar but in using a line tester found out a bad trilene knot breaks harder that a bad palamor. Not that we ever tie bad knots!!

I always use a uni knot. I have never had a break off at the knot and I've never had it slip. I double it up as well.

I use palomar for almost everything. I will use an improve clinch with mono/copoly when tying big baits, ie spook, just because I think it's a pita to make a huge loop then try to run all the trebles through it.

does the SD jam knot have any ill afffects on mono that you are aware? I've bounced back and forth between the SD jam and palomar and haven't found a very large differential to choose one over the other but my sample size is considerably small.

Palomar for everything, except for tying braid to leader material and for that I use the modified albright.

I use the SD jam on mono and fluoro all the time.  Neither have broken at the knot.  My testing has shown that the SD jam is just as good on mono as it is for fluoro.

I use a palomar knot for just about everything, If the bait is large with lots of treble hooks I make sure to spray some line conditioner on it before I tighten it down to make sure no line gets damaged. You do not want to sinch that large of a loop down with the line dry because it could cause line damage. Even on small loops with this knot I will moisten the line.

I use an improved clinch knot 99% of the time. I can't even remember the last time I had a knot failure.

 

For some crankbaits, I'll take off the split ring and use a loop knot. That makes up the other 1%.

I always take off the split rings and use a loop knot on all crank/jerk baits.

Same here. Been using it for almost everything for 40 years with no problems at all.
