Stlbob Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I am a big fan of certain kinds of guns. Some call them Assault rifles the warped anti gun people are always trying to ban them. I own a few.My favorites are my Aug and my Sig 556 patrol..yes they are black and have limited uses ,but they are great for protecting your home and are a lot of fun.I used to shoot 2 gun match with these two... An older gentleman with hunting rifles told me that my 'kind' are whats going to end up causing the next ban.I and many like me are so aware of public perception about our weapons of choice we strive to be boy scouts when out at public ranges. These weapons fill a need that nothing else can.Dont say shotgun apples and oranges .why do you think many Pd's now have Ar's in the trunk of patrol cars..? Because they understand the value of having a weapon like this close at hand. just my .02 all i ask is that the reply's be civil. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 all i ask is that the reply's be civil. And stay on topic. If it strays into politics, it will be stopped immediately! Jeff 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 Guns are tools. Every tool has its use.A lot of people with semi atuomatic rifles are enthusiasts and they spend a lot of time and money tinkering and shooting as hobby. Most of these people are law abiding citizens that don't bother anybody.I have 2 and I enjoy them.I don't care what people say or think. It doesn't change the man I am.God forbid anything ever happen on American soil of large scale, but I age there will be plenty of narrow minded anti gun folks that are seeking people like us for protection. 1 Quote
Stlbob Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 its funny i tell my wife all the time that if anything bad were to go down i would be the most popular guy in the family...lol you know all you have to do is look what happen with Katrina...you may have to fend for yourselves for a bit until things settle down..We are here in the Midwest living on the New Madrid fault..One day we are going to get a big quake...Even when Joplin got wiped out by a F5 tornado the scum were out. Looters going thru the wrecked town..harsh words and reason wont do the job in situations such as that .. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 There is a very good video made either by ex law enforcement or ex military explaining the only difference between a semi automatic hunting rifle and an AR is hunting rifles aren't scary looking and intimidating. I can't seem to find the video on youtube. Quote
msk Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 And all I would have said to that gentleman is....hunting rifles are just like sniper rifles....they can kill people to if given to the wrong individual. It would be wise for him to just carry on about his business and keep his nose out of yours. DRIVE ON! 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 I've had the similar conversation. There are plenty of people who use ARs for hunting in fact all my hunting partners for coyotes carry ARs into the field when we go calling. I'm the only one who carries a bolt gun. I only have my .243 as far as center fires are concerned. The comment about hunting rifles being like sniper rifles are correct. My coyote gun my .243 is all black and sports a 4-12x40 optic I can tell you this I shoot it enough and know it inside and out if I can see it I can kill it. I wouldn't hesitate to take a 500yd shot or farther. Regardless of what guns you fancy AR, long rifles, pistols, cowboy action, ect they are all lethal and all subject to be banned if the powers to be want. Quote
BassnChris Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 There is a very good video made either by ex law enforcement or ex military explaining the only difference between a semi automatic hunting rifle and an AR is hunting rifles aren't scary looking and intimidating. I can't seem to find the video on youtube.Just like almost every story you see in the news regarding firearm.......a shooting , gun law or anything gun related.......is always illustrated with a picture of a semi-auto pistol or an AR/AK looking image. They just feed the peoples fears. I hate it! As a species.....we let that which we do not understand .....cause us fear.....instead of learning about it. We need more people to stand up when we recognize a threat and report it. I saw a story last night on the CBS evening about a mother that turned in her son when she realized he bought 2 AR-15 style weapons. He was going to go on a spree at Walmart or a theater. He has a history of mental illness and had been voluntarily admitted several times to mental facilities. Only for a few days and always discharged with different diagnosis. Since it was voluntary, no record to prevent gun purchase. In the interview the boy seemed like most teenagers....pretty well adjusted. When the reporter asked if he would do it, the boy answered there was a 50-50 chance at anytime.......and that he was fine while occupied but when alone or bored began to fantasize about it. That boy faces life in prison because be declined the judges offer to consider admission to a mental facility. KUDOS X10 for that mother......we all need to be like her. Even to the boy as I think he recognizes that he is a danger and his good side said no hospital......prison only. My prayers go to them. 1 Quote
grizzly1654 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 That's cool! I would buy a couple lol. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 I guess I don't see that as a disturbing conversation. I mean it is about knowledge and familiarity. Much like if i talk to someone about fly fishing the majority of people have no clue other than what they saw on a river runs through it or the orvis catalog. Now granted the perception of fly fishing doesn't bring about fear but the concept is the same. Education is your friend. Quote
Gaerith Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I do not enjoy the thought of easy access to fully automatic weapons. However, with 3d printing technology it's an inevitability. Someone will make a 3d printed fully auto gun, even if printers have DRM to block the printing of guns. Someone will crack it, just because they can. So, I think that gentleman's argument is rather null. Politicians probably will try to restrict your gun owning rights. They'll probably get a lot of it wrong. Regardless, guns are going to get into the hands of the wrong people. Will you having an AR protect you better? In most situations I don't feel so, but if the bad guys are going to have access to them then I can't argue with your right to have them. Quote

Fully auto guns need to be incredibly strong I don't for see a 3d printing machine producing one because well arnt they plastic. Fully auto guns are hard to get by the average citizen you can't just go buy one. ARs are not automatic heck the military version of the same guns the M4 isn't even auto. The M4 has burst and in my 6+ years in the army as an infantryman I think my rifle has gone on burst less then 5 times and most of them times were in a spendex to get rid of blanks and then another time to prove you cannot accurately manipulate the weapon on burst while at SDM school. Criminals will always have access to guns or explosives no matter how many laws you make. Like the saying locks only detur honest people if some one wants what you have bad enough they will get it same goes for getting a weapon. Quote
Gaerith Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I'm aware of the amount of heat and general stress guns are under when being fired. . I am not saying the tech is there right now, but it will be possible. Probably within 10 years. Semi autos have already been made that work. Just the way 3d printing can print things structurally has increased the 'strength' of plastic. They did a test on 3d printed dashboards for cars using plastic and they were both lighter and stronger/safer than traditional manufacturing methods (hope I'm remembering that right). Polymers will improve with time - just look at materials like carbon fiber. Honestly, I wish full auto and burst fire guns didn't exist, but they do. That was my main point: whether they are banned or not you will be able to get ahold of one in the future. Stolen, bought, printed - access to guns will most likely become easier. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 What I don't understand is all this worry about 3d printing when the ability has always been there to make guns by hand or anyone with a little machining experience can make a gun. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 3, 2014 Global Moderator Posted February 3, 2014 While I don't agree with the argument that an AR is a good option for home defense (unless all hell had really broken out), I do agree 100% that the only reason people are against them is they're "scary looking". You can't change the violent tendencies in some people. Before it was guns it was the bow and arrow or sword, before that it was a spear, club, or big rock. I mean the worst terrorist attack on our soil was by means of airplane, another by fertilizer, no bans on those. More people are killed each year by drunk drivers than by gun violence, yet most first time DUI offenders get a year or less of jail time and cars certainly aren't going anywhere. There's lots of reason I believe gun owners and their rights are on the hot seat, none of which I can discuss without getting political so I'll just leave it at that. 1 Quote

I agree that an AR or any assault type rifle is not good for home defense infact it is probably the worst especially because 90% of the people out there use FMJ and surplus ammo because its cheap. FMJ will not stop some one with out a few hits even at center mass and after they poke a small hole in the assailant the round is going to go threw them then the wall and into your daughters room or out side into the neighbors house.
