blongfishing Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 So this year I got my first bass boat. I've used jon boats and bank fished. My uncle Is a guide so he never puts his stuff up and he's my go to guy for questions on fishing. I was just wondering do you keep your tackle in your boat or take it out when you are storing it? Super User WRB Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 Depends where you store the boat. If you store the boat in a locked garage, keep everything in it. If you store the boat covered outdoors or where thieves can steal your stuff, then remove what is valuable. Do not keep your sonar units mounted when trailering your boar boat, remove them. Tom Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 Do not keep your sonar units mounted when trailering your boar boat, remove them. Tom Exactly. It only takes a minute for someone to pilfer your units when you stop for gas or to get snacks on the way home. Quote
BassnChris Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 WRB is right on. If my boat is being stored in the garage I might leave the rods and tackle in the boat overnight if its late, or some special issue. But I store my rods, tackle and electronics (always) in the house except on the occasional situation above. We have a routine......get home and unload the gear and tackle into the house. I think the climate control is good.........I feel the temperature extremes in the garage is hard on both my gear and tackle. I also have dedicated cases for my electronics. They only come out of the cases when we get to the lake and right back into the cases when we are done. When traveling.....like on the Annual Bass Resource Road Trip......I keep all the rods, tackle and electronics in the cab of my truck. When traveling more than a day from home with my boat....... I will unload the gear and tackle from the truck into my motel room for the night. I don't even leave the trolling motor out when traveling long distance. Plus it's more secure. Just my .02 cents. Super User Long Mike Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 My boat is stored outdoors, so all my gear, including the PFDs, comes out of the boat after each trip, and is stored at room temperature. The exception is my batteries. They stay plugged in to my DualPro charger, 24/7. Quote
BassnChris Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 including the PFDs Yeah.......I forgot to mention the PFDs.........leave those in an uncontrolled environment and you end up with mold.........and or the cost of replacing the charge tubes after they deploy! That equates to $$$$$$. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 When it's stored for the winter, it all comes out. I keep it in a secure storage lot year round and do not remove the tackle during fishing season. Graphs come off the boat as soon as it's loaded on the trailer. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 During the season, Everything is left in the boat except my electronics. They come off as soon as the boat is pulled out of the water. If I'm around a place where there's a possibility of anything getting stolen, I lock all my storages including my battery compartment. I've got a through hull fitting for my battery charger so I can keep my batteries charging without leaving the lid open. When I store my boat for the winter, everything comes out tough. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 I keep it in the boat except for stuff that is only used seasonally like Float n Fly rod. They stay in my rod storage closet in the garage. I only take my electronics off if I am covering the boat in a campground and think that they may get too hot. I keep a good insurance policy in case stuff gets stolen. Quote
blongfishing Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks guys my grandpa owns a boat shed I will store it in. I will take my stuff home after fishing. Quote
CDMeyer Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I keep a view Plano's in my boat, but I take my soft tackle bags out every night Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 2, 2014 Super User Posted February 2, 2014 EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. After each adventure and in the winter. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. You don't have to worry about theft or mold. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. Quote
BassnChris Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. After each adventure and in the winter. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. You don't have to worry about theft or mold. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. Soooooooo........what you're saying is "EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT"........is that right? I agree 100%! Quote
Super User geo g Posted February 3, 2014 Super User Posted February 3, 2014 Since I keep the boat in the garage, I also keep alot of stuff in the boat. If Im staying at a hotel on a trip, I take as much out as I possibly can. Do not leave Electronics, Rods or Reels on the boat. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. After each adventure and in the winter. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. You don't have to worry about theft or mold. EVERYTHING OUT OF THE BOAT. This! Quote
Nice_Bass Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Devils advocate here- I keep everything in the boat, in my garage, with all hatches opened. i- honestly, I don't even take the electronics off year round, and only when trailering farther than 30mi or so is when I do take them off. Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I go out 3-5 times a week and although I'm tempted, I never leave my gear in my boat. The exception is my plastics. I do, however, keep it in my truck where it's placed when leaving the lake. Both my boat and truck are kept in my driveway, but in the truck the gear is out of sight to prying eyes. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 6, 2014 Super User Posted February 6, 2014 I don't have a boat, but if I did I would not leave anything in it. I have heard a lot of stories about people leaving their gear in the boat overnight, and when they came out the next morning it was gone. Quote

Tom I assume you have ram mounted units both mine are both flush mounted I never remove them on the road or at an outdoor gated facility were I store my boat. I do remove all gear during the winter storage other than the AGM batteries. I also keep all lockable storage compartments locked except when I'm on the water. I do remove PFD's after each trip. Tight Lines Pa Angler Quote
B@ssCrzy Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I have an aluminum bass boat that is stored outside and everything comes out. There is always moisture that develops in the compartments so I don't want any of my stuff to get mold or corrosion because of that. Trolling motor is bolted down so it stays on all year long. Foot pedal for trolling motor and electronics all are taken off the boat when the boat hits the trailer at the boat ramp. Batteries stay on year round plugged into my on-board battery charger/tender. Quote
3dees Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 I can't imagine taking everything out after every trip. I do that before winter and it takes a couple of hours. I remove my graphs and that's it. lockers are locked and boat is covered and stored in my yard. 35 years and never had a problem. Quote
