tbone1993 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Does anyone use a ml casting rod for shad raps? I cannot cast them well on casting gear and prefer spinning gear when throwing them. I dont have any ml casting setups. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Check out the Fenwick Smallmouth 6'9" MLF. Should work well. It is rated for 1/16-5/8 oz. I have been throwing the 3/16 oz. Shad Raps on 3 different casting rods. You not only need a baitcast reel capable of throwing light lures, but a rod that will load properly. The reel needn't be a Pixy either. Two of the reels I use for these lures are the older gold Carbonlites. Rods are a ML Crankin Stick, older ML HMG and Falcon Light Expert. Quote

Thought you were asking which spinning rod to use which is why I suggested the 6'9" ML. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 Sorry for the double post. Computer is really messing up thanks to my grandsons downloading who knows what junk. Quote

Super User Scott F Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 If the spinning gear is working well for you, why do you want to switch to a BC to throw the shad raps? 3 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 Best shad rap rod I've ever used is the St Croix Avid 6-8 MXF Spin. It's money on those baits. 2 Quote
Hogsticker Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 The Kistler KLX medium light moderate fast rods should work well for this. Also the Phenix Recon medium lights. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 We throw the #5's and #7's on spinning gear, only. Medium or MH 7-foot rod of your choice. Shimano 2500 spinning reel. 8 pound fluorocarbon line. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 1, 2014 Global Moderator Posted February 1, 2014 IMO, spinning gear is the only way to go with #7 and smaller shad raps. It handles the light line and light lures much easier. Shad raps catch the wind so bad and fly so inconsistently that even if a casting rod is capable of casting them, you're still going to blow your reel up occasionally. 1 Quote
bigfishbk86 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Like others have said, go with a M or maybe even a ML spinning rod. Quote

millerp Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 might be a stupid question but ,what are casting rods good for if there only rated from 1/16 to 3/8 weights? were would you use these rods and what lures? 1 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 25, 2018 Super User Posted February 25, 2018 Like a niche/specialized catecory. A person might toss ned rigs, 1/8 pond magic or micro spinnerbaits, 2"-3" paddle tails anything in that weigh range. Quite a few casting reels made now to match with a light powered rod. I don't have quite that light 1/16 rated but I have 1/8 rated 7'6" casting for used for the above lures. 1 Quote
millerp Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Thank You for the reply, I have 2 casting rods 1 is rated 1/8 to 3/8ths and the other is rated 1/4 to 5/8 ths Cant cast very far with them need practice. Quote

I don't have or use casting rods rated that light, but I would consider it simply to avoid accumulating line twist on any light, non-stationary bait that will be cast and retrieved long distances over and over again; Shad Raps are actually a good example along with other small crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Super User Angry John Posted February 25, 2018 Super User Posted February 25, 2018 The daiwa steez flex lite rod is amazing for this. I use 6 lb flouro and a daiwa alphas. I have the medium which is good down to the #5 but there is a medium lite version of the rod that would load and cast just about anything. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 26, 2018 Super User Posted February 26, 2018 If you have spinning gear and also prefer spinning gear why worry about others? unless you try to find some excuse to spend money for new rod and reel 1 Quote
tbone1993 Posted February 26, 2018 Author Posted February 26, 2018 Thanks for all the replies on my four year old post lol. Lot has changed since then. Honestly I still don't have a ML casting rod I prefer to just use spinning for light applications. I was looking at getting a ML to run finesse presentations but still have the power of a bait caster/ accurate casting etc etc. I was interested to see if anyone was running shad raps on casting gear. Super User burrows Posted February 26, 2018 Super User Posted February 26, 2018 I throw Shad raps on an Loomis e6x 845c it throws them well I usually only throw #7 but I also throw the #5 sometimes. I have it paired up with a chronarch mgl it throws lighter baits well. I rather throw light crank baits on baitcasters than spinning gear. 2 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 Falcon ml moderate fast 6'6" casting rod with Pflueger Asaro reel and 8lb gamma copoly line works for shad raps for me. I only using spinning for drop shot or dock skipping or crappie jigs. Quote
Yudo1 Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 I use a KLX finesse casting rod, megabass x4 hedgehog and major craft volkey. All of these load and cast shad raps nicely paired with a pixy with ray's studio spool and T3MX with ray's studio spool. The only technique I prefer spinning gear for is vertical drop shots. Quote
